2010 5.7 upgrades
 
I just pick up 2010 limited. I'm looking to do some basic mods to increase the performance and squeeze any extra mpg i can. Reading through the forums the catch can seems to be the unanimous 1st mod to do. After that I was thinking about a CAI and maybe a tuner but have read mixed reviews. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

If you get a cheap CAI, you'll get some decent increase in performance/$, but you'll never pay off the savings if you get an expensive one. A K&N drop in filter on it's own, along with opening up the drain port in the airbox for more airflow is about as good as it gets, especially if you can find a SRT8 tube on the cheap for CAI. Additionally, most of us are installing Challenger type IAT's which help the PCM get a cooler air temp for a better fuel burn/mix ratio.

The consensus on exhaust is that it's not worth it on the 5.7 performance-wise unless you change up the log style headers (which is a b*tch). The cat bat exhaust systems will cost a bunch of money and will essentially give you not much of a performance gain, unless you call a "volume enhancement" a performance upgrade.

I'm not familiar with the tuners, but I'm sure someone on here will chime in soon enough. :thumbsup:

the key thing is to get it to breathe better and then get a tune on it

4" Bwoody intake with 9" Amsoil dry filter and dry charger...had a Borla, switched to a Magnaflow and could not be happier!! Have the diablo Trinity...a tune is the most important piece of the 3...have done the CMR and canned tune route, with both having their pros/cons. You can change a lot with a tuner, so buyer beware...but man when you get it dialed in right it is a thing of beauty. There is a lot of info on here, do some searching and see what you find

How much power is a CAI worth on these, and is a tune required to correct A/F afterward, and if no tune is done, will it run too lean and be a safety hazard?

Well I can't give a power number as I dont have the hemi, but you wont need a tune if you're just running a cai. The pcm's in these trucks are fairly flexible to simple bolt ons. But of course a tune would better take advantage of the mod. Id say 8 to 14 just off a cai as a guess.

Take the advice of those who have actually done the mods to their Hemi's as there is marketing BS and untested opinions everywhere on forums . A hemi CAI is a waste of money, and is MUCH louder which gets old after about a day. In addition to emptying your wallet, you lose low and mid end torque and tip in throttle response sucks i.e to accellerate you have to mash the pedal and downshift. I did back to back runs with stock and CAI, using both stock TB and ported TB, and in both cases, with a CAI it drives worse than stock Proven worthwile upgrades are Catch can, taper ported 85mm TB, Intune with CMR tuning, and Apexi voltage stabilizer. With stock intake and exhaust back on, mine runs like a beast at all rpm with these mods. Also much smoother and quieter than stock, with a lot more torque, so you don't need to mash the pedal and downshift to accellerate quickly. MPG is also better than stock, at 20 mpg Hwy, City mpg is up to the user... mine avg's under 12 city as it is so much more fun to drive.

I'll second (or third) most of this, regarding the CAI. The stock airbox is more than capable of handling the CFM of air that the 5.7 is capable of processing. The only real gain you'll see with any CAI (as long as the stock one is functioning properly) is maybe a little power increase on the top end. Driving around town or on the highway, the gains will be nil.

Now a tuner, on the other hand, is an OK investment. You will notice some gains when everything is properly setup. Unlike most vehicles today that use the Mass Airflow System, Chrysler uses the Speed Density System type of fuel management. At cruise the PCM and front O2 Sensors control the a/f mixture (14.7/1), and at WOT preprogrammed "look up" tables contol the mixture based on sensor inputs. The tuners do modify them to some extent. With the Diablosport tuners you can tinker with the WOT a/f settings yourself. For an otherwise stock vehicle this is not recommended nor necessary. Overall, in stock mode, WOT mixtures run in the neighborhood of 11-12 to 1. Maximum performance is generally achieved at a/f ratios of 12.8-13.2/1.

I got a great deal on a Volant intake here on the classified forum under jeep stuff for sale... Only paid $150 shipped, if you can get a good deal like that and you want it to sound a bit more like a Hemi, then do it but, keep in mind it will never sound or perform like your buddies SRT8 lol. At least that's my experience lol. I like the way my intake sounds, but I could see how someone could get tired of it, or the wifey gets annoyed by it and asks you to take it off her jeep as was the case for the guy who sold me mine. I want to do my exhaust soon but only because I have a small leak (urban wheeling incident) that bugs me when I hear it. I will hopefully inherit my friends SRT8 headers when he decides to upgrade them, then I'll definitely want to do the exhaust and ported throttle body.

As far as immediate bang for buck mods if you read through the forum everyone says the same thing, ported tb and get a tune, and if you want to make your motor run better and last longer get that catch can too. Those are the next things I want to do to my 05 5.7 also.
