CRD MY2014 Engine Noisy When Cold - & Auto Gear Shift Jerky

Done about 2000K's now...and wondered if what Im experiencing is par for the course.

Every first 10 minutes or so of driving ...the engine noise on slight acceleration sounds like an old diesel ..a noisy clack, clack, clack... between 1000 and 1300rpm's...once warmed up the noise is gone.

Auto Gear changes- second and third gear change jerks when it engages with a little acceleration.. (especially second gear)

Everyone/anyone notice these ?

When using the paddles .... gear change is very smooth.

Can't comment on the gear shift as I have a poor man's 2012 Overland, however the increased engine noise as she is loosening up is normal. I nurse-maid mine until the moment the temp gauge moves then drive "normal". Mine made the same noise around the same 2000kms mark but has not got any louder since (now sitting just below 40k). Kinda like the CRD "tick" as it adds to the robustness of the vehicle. Congrats on the CRD. Good choice:thumbsup:.......PS Paddles? you mean yours floats?:D

All diesels clatter more until they warm up....and diesels warm up slower than gas engines. The new CRD is incredibly quiet relative to older diesels. Use the remote start and she'll be warmed up on cold days.

The new 8 speed shifts different when its cold but all auto trannies do that. They operate on hydraulic pressure and the cold fluid behaves different. It has an integrated heater to warm it up quicker. Just go easy on it until it is warmed up a bit and all is well.

We don't have the luxury of remote start in Australia.

Yes we are in a cold snap at the moment here...and it figures...will take it easy from now on from cold.

Also agree I noticed how the gear changes are different between cold and normal temps.

Thanks for the help

No remote start in Oz...shame.

Re: CRD MY2014 Engine Noisy When Cold - & Auto Gear Shift Jerky

My Laredo is booked in next week .. I just wanted to update that even though the weather has warmed considerably that the engine makes a hell of a row for the first 20 minutes....to me it is like a lack of lubrication...

And the slower you go the worse it is...if you boot it then there is no loud engine noise...a slight touch on the accelerator is when the noise kicks in...it is like someone banging on a tin shed door..very loud and I wonder very much if this is normal. Having had other diesels I can say none have had this to this level... it is getting slowly worse.

As no one else has answered to having noticed this excess noise makes me think more so it is an issue.

Im going to try and capture the sound and post it for ref.

I guess in the end if the engine goes whilst on warranty...I can always get a new one fitted.?!

Grand Cherokee Jeep Limited loud tappet noise | carsguide.com.au

Well Im not the only one perhaps ...loud tappet noise!?

Sound is a relative thing. If you are used to the fast idle and smoother sound of a gas motor on cold start, then the CRD is loud when cold. By my standards as an owner of older diesels, my CRD is extremely quiet on a 25 F cold start. If you have a bad glow plug, the engine would make a loud clacking sound until warm. Mine does not.

I will video a cold start with the hood up the next chance I get so you can have something to compare with. Mine is already warmed up for the day.

Hi
Had my transmission reflashed today (n58flash?) along with the radio .cluster, cruise control and they are ordering a new reverse camera as the one on it now is crap.
The transmission is as smooth as silk.Couldn't be better.
With out forums like this we wouldn't know what is available as the dealers do not inform you of any upgrades.

Re: CRD MY2014 Engine Noisy When Cold - & Auto Gear Shift Jerky

Thanks for the feedback Elvin...hoping next week the TSB work will fix mine as we'll

Excursion I'm yet to capture the sound ..believe me I've had other diesels...this sound is bad...more the loud clack clak clak..yet it sometimes does not occur..this makes me think there is some kind intermittent fuel flow problem...the engine also makes a whistling sound when you take your foot of the throttle
