Urea Tank Failure

So I read in this forum that "The final holdup was no urea tanks installed. They literally installed most of them in the storage parking lots."

Maybe this explains why my check engine light came on two hours after I left the dealership. There was a diesel exhaust odor in the cabin and a "Service DEF" message in the EVIC. Was told the DEF tank was leaking and parts were ordered. Been in the shop for over a week and still waiting for it. Hope this is an isolated problem.

BTW, my trip home was about 15 miles on a 45mph road. Zeroed out the mpg in the EVIC, and had 40.5mpg when I stopped. Continued on another short trip of 30 miles with one stop between and mpg was still over 32. Not bad, short sample size, but a promising start.

Oh boy --- good luck on that! Meaning this should not be happening to a $50K truck.

Somebody stop me if I am wrong but the urea tanks/SCR systems is North America diesel only. The Euro/world diesel version does not use this. That means these urea related parts are brand new To the CDJ parts system. Chrysler needs to get thier act together. And quick.

I am accepting delivery on Friday the 22nd and this is another thing I will be checking for.

For now, yes, the tanks/setup are unique to NAFTA. EMEA should be getting it soon with Euro 6 emission standards coming.

I heard the same thing, and I don't believe a word of it, either an urban legend or an over simplified version of the fact.

It did seem like a stretch, and then my tank failed.

Yesterday, the dealership told me they were wrapping up the repairs but they want to run the car through some tests today to make sure it is fixed. Should get it back tonight:)

Silverdiesel, good luck with your new Jeep. I think my problem was an isolated incident probably an assembly defect and not a failed part, but I'll find out more tonight and let you all know.

Re: Urea Tank Failure

My dealer really stepped up for me. Had to get a complete DEF Tank Assembly pulled from the vehicle assembly line. That included the tank, pump, injector and all fittings. I picked up the vehicle last night and all seems fine now. Dealer ran it for 50 - 60 miles just to make sure and then topped off the diesel tank. Looks like DEF tank is around 75% full.

My dealer is also requesting that Jeep adjust the in-service start date to reflect the reality that the vehicle was only mine for 2 hours and then took almost 10-days for repairs.

The bad news is that they don't know what caused the problem. It could have been a failure of any one of the components in the DEF tank that triggered the fault or it could have been an assembly issue. The GM of the dealership told me that he is personally taking the next diesel GC for a trial ride before offering it for sale, just to be sure this doesn't happen to anyone else

Second delivery was as exciting as the first and I am really impressed by this vehicle. If this ends up being my only problem, I will be very, very pleased with this vehicle.

Candyman - thanks. Adding to the list of things to monitor if my unit ever graduates from 'final inspection'.

similar issue at my dealership. guy never made it off the lot before the MIL illuminated. was going to borrow a tank assembly from another vehicle but found the DEF line quick connect fitting not fully inserted to the pump outlet.

Maybe they just peed in the tanks after they installed them.

My tranny cooler line quick connect was not fully inserted. At 800 miles it popped out and dumped a bunch of ATF. I'm guessing QC just does a visual check on these when they should be pushed/pulled for a check.

How did your dealer manage this? I had a urea/DEF fluid injector crack on Nov 25th and the part is not due for delivery till January 5th, even though my truck is classified as VOR (vehicle off road). Driving a rental till then. I wish they would pull the part off of production instead of having to wait for the supplier to ship to the dealer. My dealer somehow found out that there are currently 5 JGC diesels that are in VOR status due to cracked urea/DEF injectors.

Re: Urea Tank Failure

kaziii,

Sorry to hear about your DEF Tank problem. It really makes me appreciate what my dealer did to get a replacement tank pulled from the production line. I don't know how they did it, and did not even know they had to do it until the night I got the vehicle back. It was bad enough that it took 10 days. I really feel for you with that month+ wait. Maybe you can make a suggestion to the service manager and see what happens.
