Jeep grand cherokee laredo overheating
 
So I have a 2003 cherokee Laredo, 4.0. Tonight I started it to warm up for 10 min or so. (Typically having heat blasted) Came out to drive home and temps were maxed out and check guages light was on. No idea for how long. No steam or anything coming from hood like coolant was boiling. (Had previous thermostat and fan relay switch replaced)

Turned it right off and waited for 20 min. Tried it again to see if temps had dropped to no avail. All fluids looked good. Turned it off again. Decided to leave it and get a ride home. Tried to turn it on just to move it back into parking spot and it turned on but sounded gurgly and almost stalled but I turned it off first. Lights flickered like an alternator issue but I know it's not that. No horrible smell and no major leaks I could see in dark parking lot. Will check in the morning.

Reading up that it may be a belt? Fan or water pump. Not sure where to start? Ideas on trouble shooting? Had been making a weird whistling but went away when warmed up. Was thinking a belt was going. Just put four new rotors pads and two calipers and transmission solonoids. Not happy! Hope I didn't blow a gasket or crack anything.

Eventhough the problem could be with the accessory drive belt or belt tensioner, you should then also have had the battery not charging red light and the power steering not working. Still a good point to start the trouble shooting with. Also remove the radiator cap and check if the radiator is full with coolant and if the overflow reservoir is at the right level.
If the drive belt is ok, the tensioner is working as well and the radiator is full with fluid, then you should check if the water pump is working. You need to remove the radiator cap again and if possible remove some coolant (it will otherwise flow over when the engine/coolant heats up) and then check for flow in the coolant through the radiator fill hole. The coolant will only start flowing when the thermostat opens, so the engine needs to heat up first. If the waterpump is not working at all, there will be no coolant circulation and the standing still coolant will heat up pretty quick and can/will start boiling locally. No experience on the 4.0, but if you could feel the heater hoses, you should feel them getting hot quite quickly, since the coolant will flow through them from the start. If they stay completely cold, then it could be a sign that the waterpump is not working.

Today I took a chance to get it home. Drove it 20 minutes home and no overheating. It actually stayed just under 210 as usual. Had fluid in the reservoir in the radiator cap.

Now debating replacing the belt, thermostat and water pump all together. If I'm tearing everything out might as well replace what I can? 140k mikes and I haven't replaced anything other than the thermostat and relay about 90k mikes ago.

The fact that the engine is running ok now with normal temperature makes me wonder if the pump could be the problem. Did you try to duplicate the problem and let it idle for 10 min? I would suspect the thermostat, but then again, strange that it seems to be working ok now.
No idea on any brand better then other. If you decide to change the pump, be sure you get the right one. Depending on model year and application, the pump is a reverse rotating pump or a forward rotating pump. The reverse rotating pump has "REVERSE" stamped or imprinted on the fan viscous drive cover and fan inner side and a letter "R" on the back of the waterpump impeller.
One of the better and silent running belts is the Goodyear Gatorback belt. Iīm running it on my 4.7 and quite happy with it.
When you remove the belt, check the belt tensioner for smooth operation over the whole travel range and donīt let it slap against its stop.
And if the cooling system is open already, i would change the upper and lower radiator hoses as well.

Well I wondered if it were the belt or water pump would it even run right? At all?

We've got the thermostat and gasket and we'll check the pulley and belt while were in there. If the pulley wiggles at all then I'll pick up a water pump. I think we'll have the radiator and fan out anyways for room to work.

The engine can run without the belt, but the waterpump (besides power steering pump, alternator and AC pump) will not be driven and the engine temp will rise soon into the red zone. Since you could drive it home it can not be that. Waterpump itself is possible. Sometimes the impeller is loose on the axle and will not move enough coolant at idle, while it still.can work sufficiently above idle. For that reason you better let it run at idle for prolonged time and keep an eye on the coolant temp, just to rule out a bad pump.
Does your jeep have the fan driven by the engine, or only the electrical fan? I believe that you don' t have to remove the radiator, only the fan should be enough. If you need to replace the waterpump take care that the five bolts have different lenghts.

While you are at it, locate all the grounds that go from the engine to the chassis and clean their connections and tighten them. Same for the alternator to chassis ground, starter to engine/chassis ground.

You can visually check the serpentine belt, if it looks at all bad I'd replace it. They often need retensioning after a few weeks of install.

When you replace the water pump, make sure you get one that rotates in the correct direction. Usually you can see weeping a bit at the drain, but if you are going in for the thermostat, I'd just replace the thing.

Check all your hoses to make sure they are nice and firm.

If the cooling system hasn't been flushed, this might be a good time to do that as well.

And, if you can locate a temperature sensor, you might want to replace it as well.

Yes, it will run if the water pump is failing. It just gets hot.
HESCO makes a really nice water pump.... possibly a tad overkill.

Fan should be checked to make sure it has good coupling when the engine is hot... another problem area.

Ok so we determined today it's an electrical fan, and it did not turn on after 10 minutes of idling. The belt looks fine and is nice and snug. The thermostat should be simple, then I'll check the relay switch too, since it's been an issue before. We'll let it cool and try again and feel hoses. I'm not taking the belt or water pump out unless I have to at this point. It's effing cold and the garage is not heated!

Replaced the cooling fan relay and seems ok for now! Is this a common issue? Obviously this makes it twice for me in 90,000 miles and this one has lifetime warrantee. Just in case. Gonna keep a close eye on it for a few weeks to be sure that's all it was.

The cooling fan relay is a bit of a weak point. That it held for 90000 miles is quite good in fact. When it would fry again, then it could be that the fan is drawing too much current.
