My reading leads me to these as the best bang for your buck mods on the 4.7HO
- 3" exhaust with high flow cat and muffler
- CAI (you already have this)
- Tune of some type: SCT offers more control, SuperChips is really easy and I had good success with the SC on a 4.7 powered 2006 RAM

Get a jet stage 2 chip with the new thermostat. Or pony up and get a vivid linq

(You don not want to go any bigger than 2" on the exhaust)

Headers are pretty hard to find for the 4.7, due to the tiny amount of space that's left after the 4.7 is stuffed in. Plus headers are used to up Horsepower and can actually decrease your torque. Your call. I have a 01 4.0 and I straight piped her all the way back. gutted all 3 cats and cut off that restrictive factory muffler. Im running 2.5" all the way back and have gained an extra 6mpg, not to mention the pickup has improved quite a bit. next look at getting a $$Nice$$ tuner (superchips), and Upgrade to a larger throttle body(BBK). I added E3 plugs and gained an instant 7mpg, With greatly improved Throttle response. In the 4.7HO most of the internals have been upgraded so I cant really think of any engine upgrades you could do without dropping thousands. So when it comes down to it:
1. Straight pipe/ High Flow cat with 3" all the way out
2. Tuner
3. Throttle Body
4. Plugs

Headers are great on V style engines however they are not benefitial for the L6's. Sorry should have clarified. Take a look at the 4.0 exhaust manifold, stock its really not that bad. On the other hand take a look at the 4.7 manifold, its awful. My point was that its hard to fit a set of headers into a 4.7 without some fab and relocation. But headers on the 4.0 really wont help you out too much, and may cause a loss of torque. Inlines get a fair amount of torque from back pressure.

Trust me on this one I have done a great deal of research on headers for inlines. Before my WJ I had a 92' F150 with the Ford 300 in it (4.9 L6). I loved that engine, had amazing low end torque, 265 ftlbs @3k but only had about 145 hp, and I wanted to squeeze as many horses as I could out of her.

i dont think its the design of the engine that causes the loss of tourqe in the 4.0. I think a lot of it has to do with the heads on the 4.0, i have seen plenty of inline engines benifit from headers. Also header design is very inportant
