Anyone going from a GC to a Cherokee?

I just got back from deployment a few weeks ago - which means it was finally time to bring out my 2013 Grand Cherokee and get an oil change.

While it was being done, I got to test drive the 2014 Cherokee Trailhawk. Absolutely loved it.

Sat down with the sales guy who took my Jeep in for an appraisal while I looked online. My Jeep was estimated at ~33k for trade-in and the Trailhawk as I specced it (and was on the lot) was a "target price" of 35,800 from USAA.

Sales guy came back saying they'd sell me the Trailhawk for 40k (1k over sticker!) and my trade was only worth 23k. Promptly walked out. 2 other dealerships are offering MUCH better numbers, which are me paying 5-6k after taxes to trade in my GC.

Has anyone else went from a Grand Cherokee to a Cherokee and dealt with the trade in? My Jeep is a 2013 Laredo X 4x4 with the Hemi, Leather, Nav, Tow Group, and 13,900 miles. Perfect interior and exterior with no accidents or repairs done to the vehicle. I would think it would be graded as "excellent" by any standard then.

Kinda pissed about the process since I was hoping for a Trailhawk - however 5-6k is the max I'd pay in a trade since after that amount I am not breaking even at any time. At 5-6k I would make up for it in gas savings in about 3 years time.

Re: Anyone going from a GC to a Cherokee?

I am trading in a 2004 grand Cherokee SE V8 with tow etc. w/55K.

I had to Factory order a 2014 Cherokee Limited to get one with what I wanted on it. The trailer group and tech group make it in short supply and hard to come by at this point on the lots.

I had to order from a dealer 5 hours away to get the price I thought was fair (have bought from this dealer in the past before I moved). My local dealer is the only one for 20 miles around. The rest are also low volume high per unit profit dealers.
The internet is a great place to shop for a price gauge on what you are looking for. It saved me a lot of money. Gives you a starting point.

For the Trade I use Kelly Blue Book trade in value to gauge what to expect. I use a lower condition value and up to get a good idea.
Unfortunately I will have to deal with my trade when the new car does come in. At any rate its a good trade that should be in demand.
The dealer will give you as little as he can get away with for your trade.
In general I have had to negotiate every one of my trades up.
Just get the best price you can before you even walk on the lot (internet), then get your car priced and then work the final deal on your Trail Hawk and your trade that you want or go to another dealer.
In general I was finding larger volume dealers on the internet were 2 to 8%+ off list which would put most of them way under invoice.

I was also very impressed with the new Cherokee. It was very quiet on the Highway and the tech on it blew me away.
Good luck on your quest.

I traded in a 2013 Laredo with 26X package in last night with 9K on it. They offered me 24,500 for trade in and I got a 2014 Cherokee limited with navi and V6 for 29K. This I got a decent deal. lol kinda funny that was my situation too getting oil changed and got board.

I had a 2011 Cherokee Overland Hemi that I traded in last year for my 3/4 ton Chevy truck. I had to go to a dealer about an hour outside of Kansas City to get a decent trade and great numbers on the Chevy.

Last week I was trying to trade a BMW 335d with 23k miles for a Trailhawk. Highest trade offer was $28,500 which is about 4k under Kelly Blue Book trade-in value. Carmax was 28k. I ordered a Trailhawk and will sell the car myself. Luckily in Missouri we do not have to trade to dealer to get the sales tax credit.

If you live in a state where you have to trade in to get the sales tax credit the dealers have you over a barrel and they know it. They lobbied hard to get those laws passed.

In VA you don't get a sales tax credit at all - trade in a vehicle and you still pay full sales tax. So I traded in the GC for the Trailhawk. Ended up paying $7300 for the trade including an extended warranty. I have one on my GC so I will end up getting about $1500 back from the previous Jeep as well.

More than I wanted to spend for a trade but the fuel economy and comfort difference make up for it. I LOVE this Jeep.

Not so sure you'll be "making up the difference" in fuel savings. What were you averaging in you GC?
