Does the stock VES work as a standalone?

I tried searching the forums for this, but I didn't see anything. I am thinking about replacing my stock HU with an aftermarket. I understand that I will lose my UConnect capabilities and being able to play audio from the VES through the speakers, but will the VES work as a standalone unit with audio through the headphones or will it not work at all? I don't want to lose the VES for my kids and my sanity's sake. I have a 2005 Limited, the stock HU is the 6-disc changer with no aux jack. The HU I am thinking of getting is the JVC KW-AV61 Double Din receiver:

JVC Mobile Entertainment \ 2-DIN AV Receiver - KW-AV61 \ Introduction

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about the compatibility of this HU or how I can hook it up and keep as many stock functions (steering wheel controls, VES, possibly UConnect) as possible?

I'm curious about the VES compatibility too, though my experience with Jeep tells me that the dang thing probably won't work at all anymore if I had to venture a guess.

As for the UConnect issue, you're basically screwed because in the REC, the entire UConnect module is built into the headunit, with only the controls up on the rear view mirror so that feature will be totally lost.

As for the steering wheel controls, if your headunit has the inputs for it, you can get one of many adapter kits to keep those controls. Check crutchfield for some options.

I thought about upgrading my HU a long time back but due to all of the systems that are dependent on it, I decided to keep it until I sell the WK or the HU fries like some other RECs on here. The upgrade wasn't worth the headache and cost for me.

Ask crutchfield, tell them you are interested in a HU and they will walk you through everything you need to know.

This ^. You can restore full functionality by splicing into the wiring between the DVD player and the LCD screen and then running it back up to the head unit (if the HU has a video in you can send that upfront too)...at least you can with the 05s, but you have to tear up quite a bit of the interior trim to do so. Alternatively, if the HU has DVD, you can send the av back to the inputs on the factory DVD player and have it on both screens and audio through the factory speakers.
