2014 GC Summit on Winter Rubber
 
I want to share my experience with the shift to winter rubber on my 2014 Summit.

As we all know, the unit comes with GY Fortera on beautiful 20" polished rims. I was concerned about these when I ordered the unit so with the vehicle order I purchased a set of Michelin Latitude X-Ice2 with aftermarket rims. 265/60 R18.

I drove my SFU on the stock 20's through the first winter storm here in Ontario and was HORRIFIED at the very poor snow/ice/slush performance of the vehicle. This was surely a combination of a hard rubber compound in the GYs, and the stiff sidewall of the low profile 20" tire. Even the ABS was struggling to let me brake and steer in a simple straight line. Coming from an R320 4Matic on 18" rims I was used to awesome winter performance and was really concerned with the Jeep.

After re-shoeing with the X-Ice2 the world is a different place! I am back to very reliable snow covered braking, very predictable directional control, and low stress lane changes through the slush piles between lanes. Braking distance on ice is also dramatically improved.

so... for those of you in the Great White North, I can only say, if you have not already done so, get some winter tires on your WK2 as fast a possible with a rim no larger than 18". You will be amazed at your new winter driving experience - and this investment could save your life... literally.

Remember this, all the AWD, 4x4, Locking Diffs, Traction Control and other systems contribute NOTHING to braking performance. Your best bet is a modern winter tire with a sticky rubber compound.

THanks for the info, was driving to North Bay a few weeks back in some nasty snow and the Jeep started to sway- felt like she wanted to swap ends in the slushy conditions. Putting it into Snow mode helped some but was an unnerving feeling. I priced out 18' Jeep rims and tires at about $1200 locally ( Keswick) hope to get them on after Christmas...

You might want to put a deposit down. Some winter tires do sell out in certain sizes.

I will say that my family has always run dedicated snow tires on everything we've ever had...my dad took me out when I was 16 and showed me how 4wd can get you in trouble. We took FWD, RWD, 4WD vehicles (cars trucks suvs)to the school parking lot in the snow...sharp turns, stopping, fish tailing and how to correct, then on the road late at night. The front wheel snow tired car out performed the heavy duty 2wd truck with weight in it by a mile, and the non snow tired SUV, then we put the snows on the SUV, big difference.
I've tried to make the jeep slide(in sport mode traction control off) and tried to get the tail out of sorts. While I can a little, it's very stable, brakes well, and is under control. My 4wd dually doesn't do as well and I have 1k lbs of weight in the bed, and Toyo AT 2s. My wife feels better and more confident she can avoid the morons in their street tire equipped SUVs going 25 with a little snow on the ground...like they forget winter happens every year in NE Ohio. Even when she had blizzaks on her Altima coupe, she got around fine, it just plowed deep snow and filled the lower air dam. Just my experience, but they make them for a reason, the tread is designed to grip in cold temps and remain pliable. Yes, they don't handle as well and wear faster when it's warmer, but that's why there are other tires...and my summers last longer because I'm not running them in the winter, and get about 3-4 years out of the snows. How much is a fender bender vs the cost of some snow tires, or how much do you value your families lives?
Pics of our new diesel, with winter rims off our hemi we traded, 255/70/18 blizzaks we had on our wrangler...no rubbing, when these wear out getting 265/60
