Going for smaller rims and fatter tyres... Possible?

Hi,

I am thinking about getting a set of off-road rims and tyres. right now i'm on stock 265/50r20 and I was considering picking a smaller wheel and a fatter tyre to improve off road cushioning.
Is this doable, how do i keep the same overall wheel+tyre size?

thanks

For off-roading, consider 265/6018. Taller, not fatter, is better.

I wrote fatter i meant taller...

I found this calculator, i could even go as tall as 265/70r16 keeping the same overall height, it would be good on sand when deflating tyres

16" wheel will not clear the calipers. Neither will a 17" wheel.

Other than the most basic Laredo trim which can take a 17" wheel, 18" wheels are the minimum diameter for the current generation of JGC. As already mentioned, the brake diameter prevents using smaller wheels.

As long as the op has a v6 he will be fine with 17's. It is only with the V8 that you get the hd brakes.

^This. Just to clarify, If you have a V8, the smallest you can go is 18", and if you have a V6, the smallest you can go is 17".

No worries! So on a diesel v6 limited 17 inches are ok?

Get your build sheet and check it for heavy duty brakes. I would think you would have them on a diesel. Or you could look to see if your back rotors are vented, if so you have the hd brakes and 18" is as small as you can go.

I'm 95% sure that the diesels have heavy duty breaks, but check your build sheet to be sure. Sorry, I forgot about the diesels completely.

The diesel and the v8 have larger brakes, so 17 would not be OK.
