Power steering whine

This morning when I started my WJ there was a loud whine from the engine bay. Being -10 degrees I let it warm up some, and it was quieter but still abnormally noisy. So I checked to verify it was the PS pump, and then checked fluid. The fluid was full of air! After letting it sit at work for a few hours I checked and the fluid is over the cold mark, almost up to the hot, with the fluid cold! Sounds like it is sucking air in somehow, although I'm not sure how as there is no noticeable leak. Anybody else had this happen? Should I bleed the gear and fan and see what happens? Advice appreciated!

My new pump is loud too. I have a leak (thinking it is the o ring on the pump reservoir). I also installed a filter on the low pressure return line when I did the pump in July. I wonder if the fan solenoid is not working right and contributing to this whine.

Could be the fan, I hate this whole setup. Electric or even an old mechanical fan would be better than this hydraulic crap. I understand it takes advantage of the pump when there is little demand for it but electric would have been much less complicated. Anyone know if there is an electric option we can install or is getting a mechanical fan from a 99-00 the better route if the hydraulic one goes out?

Re: Power steering whine

I would not suspect the hydraulic fan solenoid nor the fan itself the culprit of the whine. Air is entering somewhere, so i would start looking at the reservoir and the suction side of the pump.
The hydraulic fan setup is a more complicated but mostly fine working system.
If a new solenoid is needed a Ford solenoid can be used. The solenoid itself is exactly the same, however the connector side is not, so some DIY work has to be done. Cost about 140 USD new i believe.

I think I will end up using the Lincoln LS solenoid on my WJ. I cannot help wonder if that is part of the problem with the whine.
