ESC light on
Hi - I hit my RF tire into a cement column pretty hard. It appears to have toe'd out the RF wheel a little bit as well (steering wheel slightly left of center). I now have a steady ESC light.

I've visually inspected the front suspension and nothing is broken or hanging loose. Tie rod from the rack looks straight to the eye. I've put about 500 miles on the car since the accident. Rides fine. If the steering wheel wasn't a little off you'd never know.

I know I need to get the alignment fixed which I'm doing next week.
What sensors are there in the RF wheel that work with the ESC system? Is it a wheel speed sensor in the hub?

I'd like to try and diagnose the ESC problem myself and fix it. I'm replacing pads/rotors next week myself also so if I need a hub I'd like to replace it when I have everything apart.

Any guidance? Thanks.

Re: ESC light on
Dealer can read the Code, Also did you try pressing the ESC off/on button a couple times?

Re: ESC light on
If at the dealer to have the code read also ask if he can show you the service manual diagnostics for the code. It will tell you what to look for.

Without a code it would be hard to say what happened.

Re: ESC light on
Thanks for your replies...

There are 2 ESC lights on the cluster. One controlled by the switch on the dash which says "off" under the picture of the jeep with skid marks under it (signifying that the ESC system was manually disabled) and another identical looking light but the word "off" is not displayed under it. This is the light that is on. Cycling the manual ESC on/off switch does nothing to the one that is on all the time.

I also noticed today (snow in the North East) that my 4WD and Quadra-Lift controls are completely inoperable. No lights on the center console and moving the rotary dial does nothing.

I'll try to pull the code myself with my code reader. Hopefully it's available for me to see.

I would think the ESC system has some sensor located at each wheel to measure wheel slip but ironically my ABS works just fine so it's confusing me. And my quick look underneath the RF wheel I only saw 1 wire going to the hub/spindle area.

Does anyone know how the ESC system works?

Thanks a lot for all the help.

Re: ESC light on
I had it flash *ESC ESC ESC* while i was in foot deep snow and I think I read it was working when flashing but I really should have turned it off for the deep snow.
It applies brakes to slipping wheel and cuts throttle so if you're stuck you need to turn it off.

Re: ESC light on
Since it's out of alignment your tires are probably causing the system to think one is slipping. Things may go back to normal after you get it aligned.
