power steering...again!!

my son was driving the jeep earlier. came home said the power steering isn't working. UG...just had it fixed with a new pump this summer. It's dark and was about -20 with windchill when he came home so I haven't looked yet. What I do know is the steering has been perfectly FINE up until NOW. No whining or anything. I noticed a puddle on the garage floor when I went out there a bit ago and the resevoir is Empty. The steering wasn't this bad even when the previous pump was leaking fluid terribly. So.....what should I be looking for? A hose that came off?

Check first for any obvious damage to hoses. If you are not able to find anything wrong this way, you could fill the reservoir and let it run to see where it comes out. Maybe the fluid spill area already can point you to the place where it leaked?

I'm going to take a quick peek at it later...hard to tell anything from the puddle though...skid plate diverts leaks from their original place. :-( I hope it's not the pump again!!

If a pressure hose is leaking, the fluid probably be spread around. If its a suction hose or low pressure hose, it can stay more locally.
Running the power steering pump without fluid is not good. Depending on how long it was running without fluid, it can already have caused damage to the pump.

well, finally got it to the mechanic a week or so ago. was hoping it was the pump...just because its under warranty...was just replaced in August. It wasn't the pump...it was the resevoir which had a crack in it. unfortunately though, I had to replace the new pump because there was no resevoir to buy seperately for this pump...unless I took the time to track one down in the junk yard. so bam..$230 instead of $110 for just labor. SUCKS! don't know why the resevoir cracked...it happened on one of those days when we had -40 windchill so maybe that's why. don't know. but it's fixed, for now, again.
