Disabling cellular modem on 2014 8.4AN?

I have a 2014 Summit, and I am interested in disabling the cellular modem built into my 8.4AN. I want to effect a hardware solution to this issue: i.e. disconnecting the antenna or removing the modem itself.

Ideally, the fix would avoid inducing annoying errors/warnings in UConnect.

Any suggestions? I did attempt a search on the subject, but to no avail.

It seems this is not a popular mod (haha).

GAO report: Carmakers (including Chrysler) keep data on drivers' locations

Ford CEO: "We know everyone who breaks the law, we know when you're doing it. We have GPS in your car, so we know what you're doing. By the way, we don't supply that data to anyone..." (yet)

Anyway, it's patently obvious that all manufacturers have this kind of tracking data. Ford's CEO is just more honest/open about it... no doubt to his PR department's dismay.

Aside from what you posted above, I believe its integrated with the headunit, so it might be a bit like open heart surgery with no guarantee the patient is the same after.

A while back I looked in to the same question for a couple of different in-car systems, and I found the same general lack of information. Maybe interest will grow as more cars end up with this kind of thing standard instead of optional, but so far the potential issues people have found with in-car connectivity services seem to have been swept under the rug so I'm not going to hold my breath.

Interesting. When I was considering a 4Runner Limited, I determined that the telematics module was a discrete unit that was mounted in the wall of the passenger footwell. The removal steps in the service manual were straightforward, though there were no overt DIY guides in the forums.

Back to the WK2: I thought I read in one thread or another that the 3G modem was a discrete part in the head unit. I suppose my ideal solution would be to simply disconnect the antenna for the 3G modem. This should be innocuous—I doubt the system could determine the difference between lack of cellular coverage and a disconnected antenna.

Under uConnect privacy policy I found this;

"CONTACTING US If you have any questions about, or complaints that concern, this Policy, please call us at Sprint or email us at officeofprivacy@sprint.com. If you prefer, you may also write to us at Office of Privacy – Legal Department, Sprint Nextel, P.O. Box 4600, Reston, VA 20195."

Maybe they can point you in the right direction.

I recall reading that the aircard is integral to the head unit, and that when when aircard faults are detected the whole head unit is replaced.

Hm, okay. Well, it still seems like the antenna could be disconnected. I am fairly certain I read that the roof antenna is shared, including the cellular modem. Worst case scenario, the antenna is a single run of wire which would necessitate installing a notch filter for the cellular frequencies (much like a cable company installing a block for certain services but not others).

Thanks. That implies that the requisite cellular bands to block are 800 MHz and 1900 MHz (i.e. Sprint).

Still need to determine how the antenna is connected to the head unit (i.e. the connector type), exactly where, and how to disassemble the vehicle to get to that location.

Seems a shame to have to do that kind of surgery for something that could probably be controlled through a software toggle just like "airplane mode" on cell phones. Does uConnect have a technician's service menu to access settings that they don't want mere mortals playing with?

There is an engineering menu, press and hold driver up and down temp buttons at the same time for 5 seconds. Be careful you can mess things up in there.

Interesting. With the vehicle power on or engine on?

****

Nevermind. Tried it. Was unless for someone like me. :)

I bet this could be done via software, like what Magnis is doing for the UConnect folks. Update the firmware without the bit for the air card.
