2014 Jeep grand cherokee summit rolls in park

Am very worried about my vehicle. Just under 7k miles. Had parked outside in -0 temps parked on 30-35 degree incline. After placing in park, turning off, it rolled all the way down driveway. I thought was due to ice but I had my wife verify tires were spinning even while in park. After it rolled reverse, I backed car onto driveway and it also rolled forward as well. I drove 45 miles and When I got home no longer doing it. I have two small kids, very worried to have them around it. I used my iPhone for proof it happened but I am worried dealer will not be able to replicate. In for service tomorrow, anyone else have the same issue?

No....no issue like that however, I have checked it a few times on steep grades and it held....I'm in the habit of setting my parking brake especially on any grades...I dont have any children...but if I were you I would always get in the habit of setting the parking brake...just my thoughts.

Something is clearly not right there.

Did you use your park brake?
From reading this forum it seems a common thing for Americans to not use the park brake.

If not, make sure you do, although you have an issue that needs to be looked at.

any "vehicle not in park" warning message in cluster?
is manual park release lever properly stowed in the down position?

I did not use my parking brake...but I never had in the past. Just all the sudden there is an issue seems strange to me. On the dash there were no warning lights. Hopefully the issue will be resolved today. Services dealer emailed me that will be performed:
15JEZCOURTINSP COURTESY INSPECTION
02JEZ TRANS/AXLES
40JEZ RECALL

Does the new ZF transmission family not have a parking pawl that more or less holds the transmission in place when in park?

The park position isn't intended to hold the vehicle in place, particularly on inclines.
Thats why the owners manual tells you to use the parking brake in addition to the park position.

I am always dumbfounded when people don’t use the park brake, it is there for a reason, why is it so commonly not used?
As I said earlier, I see it seems very common in the US, part of our driver training is to make sure you have the park brake engaged before you leave any vehicle.

A quick Google search shows me it is law in Texas and California, as it should be. It is a major safety part of parking any vehicle.

I think here people just view the parking brake as something you use when parked on a significant incline just as an extra precaution vs using on a daily basis. I bought mine back in April and I don't think I have used it once. Not saying its right or wrong just how it is same as when you all think all of our guns we have over here are crazy lol

I agree that moving forward, I need to make sure that I engage the parking brake at all times....maybe not even just on significant inclines. But this is the first vehicle that this has ever happened with. I have had 8 cars in the last 12 years...how is this the first time the issue came up...have I just been lucky so far? Chrysler did escalate this and they made this a severe issue at the dealership. I have a loaner car for a few day so will have to see what happens. The service manager believes that it could be a sensor issue.

Parking brake or not, it should not have happened, the PB would simply act as a backup for it.
I set the mirrors to fold mirrors in every time regardless simply so it is habit for those occasions it is actually needed.

Re: 2014 Jeep grand cherokee summit rolls in park

When in park, any single drive wheel on ice will allow the vehicle to roll, with the other drive wheel(s) turning (and the slipping drive wheel turning backwards). If it is a 4x2, then of course the front wheels will be rolling..

So, if there is ice about, seeing the vehicle rolling with the wheels turning doesn't always mean that the park lock has failed.
