uConnect Update Refuses to Run

2014 Dodge Durango Citadel
uConnect Update refuses to run.
It won't even download.

I go to the website for uConnect Updates, hoping to see that the Via Mobile options have been finally added to my dash interface.
It's located here: https://rsur.extra.chrysler.com/rsur/Uconnect.do

Enter my VIN.
It says I do qualify for the latest Update.

Then you are asked to install their Akamai NetSession untility on your PC. This supposedly works fine.

Then you are told the Download will proceed within the Browser.
This never happens.

Their second link is titled "Download the Update Software" -- but this only opens a Tutorial, and brings you right back to the previous Akamai NetSession Installer download.

Any ideas?
All Windows Firewalls, protection, anti-virus, Windows / Internet Explorer / Firefox mumbo-jumbo is turned off.
Nothing works.

Re: uConnect Update Refuses to Run

Google "Akamai NetSessions Problems".

There are instructions out there that will remedy your problem. I didn't save the link I used, just followed the instructions for IE, and it worked.

The problem isn't with the Chrysler software, but with the installer they chose to use.

If you become a supporting member here, you can download the software from the VIP section, without using the installer.

Okay. I signed on as a Supporter. I guess I'll need to wait until I'm verified and then try accessing the VIP lounge. Oops! Already Verified! Thanks, guys!

Re: uConnect Update Refuses to Run

I know this is old but this same problem occurred today for me and they got me to tech support after a few minutes. Here is the solution:

On the VIN page (using Chrome) look in the right side of the location bar. Find a grey shield, then click "run unsafe script". This will change the layout of the webpage and enable everything.

Then enter your VIN, click download.

It goes to the tutorial page, but this time you'll see a "SKIP" button. Click it.

The download will start in Akamai now (save it to your desktop). After that, run it and save it to your memory stick. Btw, memory stick must be empty, FAT32, and not larger than 32GB.

It needs to be the only file on your memory stick.

The guy said to start the vehicle up first as this can take 20 minutes sometimes. It should recognize it after a few seconds when you pop the USB stick in.

good luck!

Re: uConnect Update Refuses to Run

Thanks for the Update. It took me a long while to get around to this, but your follow-up post helped a lot. I joined Jeep Garage and then downloaded the file from the VIP Lounge here. But one thing lead to another, and three family events later -- I still never got to it.

I followed your instructions for the most part but was dismayed that none of my browsers worked properly. Not Internet Explorer. Not Firefox. Not Opera. Then I read it, again, and said to myself: "Self... let's try Chrome." So, I did. And followed your directions point-by-point. And it eventually lead to my installing the Update!

A few key points for anyone lurking...
1) The downloaded EXE file is actually a compressed file. While most of us expect to see a ZIP file, in this case, you want to place it in a folder and then double-click so it can start Extracting the contained ISO file.

2) ONLY that ISO file can appear on your USB Thumb Drive when you attempt this procedure. The original downloaded file, or any other file on that same Drive will create problems.

3) ALSO DOWNLOAD THE INSTRUCTIONS during the download from the Akamai website. You will need these in the vehicle with you and you should be careful to follow them exactly. That file contains instructions for several vehicles, so only earmark or print out the ones pertaining to YOUR vehicle.

4) This is a bizarre process, and it differs if you have Keyed Entry Only vehicles, or Keyless Entry (as I have on my Citadel). You do NOT start the vehicle, in my case. You put it into Accessory Mode, and must remove all other USB Devices before starting. Be patient because it takes a minute to recognize your Thumb Drive and determine that the file is valid.

5) In my case, the following procedures differed slightly from the Instructions:
a) The initial screen did NOT show the two program number options for comparison. It simply stated the file was valid and asked to proceed. Since I had never updated the firmware, proceeding was a no-brainer.
b) It goes thru the loading of 12 updated modules. Number 10 took the longest. Do not get anxious or play with the stereo. Do not put your foot on the brake or open the doors. Sit there and make some cell phone calls because it will take 20 minutes or more.
c) At the end, it's supposed top come back to the screen showing the two version numbers -- the one now on your system, and the one on the Thumb Drive. Mine did not. The radio simply started playing.
d) You are then supposed to turn off the Ignition. Open and close the driver's door, turn on the Accessories, then turn them off -- and do this twice. Before I did that, however, I simply turned off the Accessories, then back on -- then I saw the two version numbers listed as it detected the Thumb Drive.
e) IMPORTANT! If the two version numbers match, you are DONE. Hit "No" for the "Proceed?" question. If you hit "Yes" you will have to go through the entire procedure, again -- while it reinstalls the same firmware you just installed.
f) Others may chime in here and say you do not need to go through the door open and closed twice routine. I can't swear it's okay, so why chance it?

Good luck!

Re: uConnect Update Refuses to Run

That's excellent, glad you got it to work. The first thing the tech support guy asked me was if I was using Chrome, so I sense they might prefer it. I agree this is a crazy way to go about firmware updates... they should have equipped the car with wifi (basically free) and had people hook up to their home or work networks to take care of firmware updates behind the scenes. Tons of other advantages with that approach too, like downloading music, apps, etc.

I forgot to mention that I have a 2014 Cherokee Trailhawk (owned for 3 days now) which seemed to have fewer steps. It didn't need to do any of the extra stuff with the doors, nor did it worry about getting in and out of the vehicle.

Re: uConnect Update Refuses to Run

Pretty good step by step.

At the end when the radio comes on, if you are patient the screen with the two versions will show up. Doing it your way sure saves a little time.

As for opening and closing the door, not doing it won't hurt anything. However, the update may not be totally deployed until you decide to go for a drive ... when you will wind up opening and closing the door. So, doing it right away makes the most sense.

I get them not adding wifi- my wifi is spotty on my driveway for instance so it wouldn't work for me without some effort. So extra cost and complexity in the software for naught. And then it could be a not so great end user experience sitting on the cell phone with them - "OK sir, i understand you have only half a bar of wifi, can you drive closer to your house?.... OK I'll hold while you clean the kids toys out of the garage.... ok you can only get the car half way in and still not steady... can you pull our of the garage and back in so the sharkfin antenna is closer to your wifi.... alright, so you are backed in and still not getting a good signal can you go inside to where your kids moved the wireless router next to their xbox and see if the cable is long enough to drag it down the hallway towards your garage...." :D

BUT- still you make a hugely valid point about over the air updates - there's about a bajillion android phones on sprints network that download their firmware updates and those can be about 400mb give or take. So pretty much the same difference as the 384mb download that i downloaded for the latest uconnect update.

There's no reason sprint couldn't push it out over a matter of weeks in the middle of the night like android firmware updates happen. The network is sitting largely unused in the middle of the night. Just like android they could update most people that way. people that park out of the sprint footprint could update via usb or force a download when the get back into coverage area.

I'm not familiar with apple, windows phone, or blackberry firmware updates but assume they are similar. And since the radio is akin to a blackberry tablet, again shouldn't be an issue.

(obviously if they would have spent the extra 10 bucks to put in 4g radios it would be much faster/efficient but that's probably another topic of discussion)

Over-the-air aside, the way they download is idiotic (just like the entire web experience from chrysler- why does it take me 3 pages to log in the moparowner connect as an example....). Forcing you to install a download manager in this day and age is silly- when most people have broadband it's just not needed. generally not needed. Forcing you to use a certain browser = fail. Forcing even the preferred browser to click a button about loading unsafe content- bigger fail.

And the door nonsense- from what i understand it is allowing the radio to completey power off so it gets a fresh boot and then initializes things. But there's no reason that the OS shouldn't have a reboot function built in that can be triggered by the update.

This generation of uconnect is a vast VAST improvement over the previous few versions but still they're just not hitting it out of the ballpark- it's SOOOOOOO close it's even more maddening then the old versions that stank so badly and where hopeless.
