License Plate Rattle/Clank: FIXED

I just bought a used 2011 Laredo X, I'm loving the car but my license plate would clank when closing the lift gate and it was driving me nuts. Anyway, figured I would post my solution.

First I removed my license plate and took the opportunity to switch to a plain black plate frame from the dealer provided "advertisement". Since there are no openings for the bottom screws I purchased a 1/4-20 x 1/2 low profile bolt (looks like a Philips button cap) and capped nut. I used these to connect the plate frame and the plate on the bottom two openings (nut on the outside of the plate frame). I ground the bolt down because it was too long but washers would work too.

Next I purchased some 1/8" thick rubber and outdoor double sided tape at Lowes. I used these to create a rubber bumper that fits in the the two depressions under the top license plate screws. I'm not sure if there is normally a bumper here...however my car didn't have one and it seemed like a good place.

I made 2 little rubber bumpers to fit these openings (slightly smaller than 1" x 3/4"). Each bumper was three 1/8" pieces of rubber thick and was connected in a layer with the double sided tape. I then used the double sided tape to attach to the car and re-installed the license plate.

Result: No more clanking when I close the rear gate! Its not fancy but it worked for me so I thought I would share.

PS- Sorry for the blurry night time iPhone pics

Nice idea.. and all that road salt:o

RobbMG 01-25-2014 08:34 PM

Haha, there is so much salt on the roads in MA right now... Got all that salt this week, went to a touch less car wash today and it was closest.... So for now I have a white car instead of a graphite one.

Re: License Plate Rattle/Clank: FIXED

The bottom 2 depressions are supposed to have 2 rubber pieces (they come with the license plate hardware when the vehicle is assembled) placed there by the dealer when they prep the vehicle, but most prep people don't bother. My 2012 didn't have them but my 2014 did.

RobbMG 01-25-2014 09:37 PM

Haha, that makes sense. Now I understand why this doesn't bother everyone else :)

I used plastic bolts on the bottom holes thru the dealer frame. Of course there is the remove plate, place on ground, stomp until it bends a little, replace method.

I went to the 99 cents store and got stick on rubber discs, and just stuck them on where the bottom bolts would contact the tailgate. problem solved!

This has all been covered before, check out this thread;

Mopar makes a "Standard Rear License Plate Installation Kit"
Pkg #05160297AB ~ Part #05160296AB
This kit should have been included in the plastic bag that holds the mats, fobs, front license plate bracket, ect., when shipped from the factory.

This package is included in many new Chrysler vehicles and includes two license plate mounting screws, (for the top two mounting holes), and two small square adhesive backed foam pads, to be mounted on the body underneath the lower license plate mounting holes. On a Grand Cherokee these pads mount in two small square recesses found on the rear tailgate under the lower license plate mounting holes to steady the plate and prevent it from scratching the painted tailgate.

This "Mopar kit" mentioned above, and the Cruiser anti-rattle kit mentioned below, should work well together to secure the plate, fill all four license plate holes with a screw, and stop all rattles! :thumbsup:

Cruiser Accessories Rattle Stop Locking Fasteners for License Plate Frames - Stainless Steel - Qty 2 Cruiser Accessories and Parts CR81400

And for all you really anal types who want all stainless matching mounting screws front & rear, or just 4 matching rear screws, with the option to use anti-tamper hardware with no rattling;

Cruiser Accessories Ultimate Kit for Mounting License Plates and License Plate Frames Cruiser Accessories and Parts CR81500

This is similar to the Mopar anti rattle kit with the exception that the Mopar comes with 4 Bolts that match. I used it with a chrome license plate frame. All four bolts match in appearance. The bottom two were very short and held the rubber grommet against the tailgate.

Do you have a part # for that Mopar "Kit"?? :confused:

The e-trailer kit I linked to above has several sets of matching screws, it includes 4 threaded both long, and short, 4 security, and 4 self tapping screws w/ threaded rubber bumpers for the WK2 rear bottom license plate holes.

I can't find the link for the Mopar kit. But if you go to etrailer.com and put in this model number in it will bring up the same kit. It's call "The Ultimate Kit" CR81500. $11.95
I remember it was twice the price at the dealer. Pep Boys also carries it.
You use the shorter screws and the rubber threaded washer for the bottom holes on the plate. The rubber washer acts as a cushion.
You can also Google the part number and it will show you a good picture of the kit.
