430N system and Moto X Bluetooth problems

I have a 2013 Trailhawk and just got a Moto X smartphone. It pairs with the car no problem. But it has a consistent frustrating habit of ending the phone call either right after connecting or just after 1 or 2 rings. This only happens when making a call by stating the person's name - not if I call out the number, so I think it has something to do with using the phonebook to make the call. It seems to be more reliable about connecting on the second try to the same number.

Any thoughts? I have reset the radio system through the voice menu prompts; I've unpaired, rebooted and paired again; I've deleted and reloaded my phonebook. Nothing seems to make it go away. I did have my older phone paired with the system before I got this new phone, but that was removed before the new phone was ever paired.

Thanks, Andy

Re: 430N system and Moto X Bluetooth problems

Hey man, I just have a few questions that might help solve your issue.

1) Is your Moto X running the latest version of Android, Kit Kat? If you're not sure check by going into your phone settings menu, choose "About phone" all the way at the bottom, and look at the "Android version". If it says 4.4, you have Kit Kat installed. It's most likely you got Kit Kat through a system upgrade which the phone prompted you to do when you first opened it.

2) Have you tried playing music through bluetooth on your Moto X?
Did it work properly?
Had you played music with your old phone through bluetooth in the past?
And did that work properly?

Ok so here's what I think is going on:
I have a Droid Maxx and when I upgraded it to Android 4.4 Kit Kat, I basically lost all bluetooth audio streaming functionality with my Uconnect system (I have a 430 RBZ, it doesn't have nav but other than that is basically the same radio as the 430N). My phone was connected through bluetooth fine but when I tried to stream music from Spotify over bluetooth to my radio the track would skip and stop every few seconds. It was very frustrating. I did some digging and found that a lot of devices running Kit Kat had bluetooth streaming audio problems. It turns out that they changed the bluetooth protocol for the latest version of Android and it doesn't play nice with the existing (conventional) protocols that our Uconnect system uses. There should be a fix in the works somewhere but I'm not sure when that's going to happen.

I think that the problem is your phone, not the radio. I'm sorry but I don't think there's much you can do about it now, unless you have a Moto X from Sprint, US Cellular, or TMobile, or a developer edition from Verizon. I've looked into it, trust me. The bluetooth problem hasn't received a fix yet AFAIK and the only way I fixed it was by downgrading from Android 4.4 to Android 4.2, and you won't be able to do that without an unlocked bootloader, which only the versions of the Moto X I mentioned are capable of having. If you have one of those versions of the Moto X and don't know how to downgrade, PM me and I'll help you out.

Also, if the phone is really new (like you got it within the past 14 days) you should be able to return it no problem.

Did you ever figure it out? I am considering this phone. It will be used with 430N in my '11 Laredo X.

You are not alone...
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 (purchased June of 2013). It was working fine, even the text messaging started to work (didn't work with my Nexus S).

Then it started acting just like you describe. I have been under the assumption that the v50 software was the root cause since it seems to be a messed up version (you can't upgrade the Garmin maps). I didn't really pay attention to when it stopped working, but I was sure it worked fine on the v33 software.

Perhaps SWBOLAND is right, maybe it's something with the Bluetooth protocol in the latest Android release....

I haven't tried BT streaming of music lately since I have 5GB of MP3s loaded on the hard drive, but I'll give it a shot when I can.

Not sure about others...
But I already checked that with the latest updates you have on your download site Sox.

I'm having the same problem with a Samsung S3. Sometimes my calls will go through no problem, other times it will ring twice and say phone call completed yet the call is still active on my phone. It seems like it started when the phone upgraded to android 4.3.

I'm still looking for a resolution as well. I'm running v33 on the 430n so it can't be the new 430n update.

Re: 430N system and Moto X Bluetooth problems

I can report that I have no problems at all with my Moto X Developer Edition for GSM networks (runs JB 4.2.2) and '11 WK2 with 430N (however, I've had the phone only for about 10 days). I am not upgrading software on my phone because as I learned downgrade from 4.4.2 is not possible on Moto X.

Re: 430N system and Moto X Bluetooth problems

So the issue appears to stem from Android 4.3 (and probably 4.4).

I can't pinpoint when I started having the issues, I just know that my S4 used to work fine and now it doesn't.

Bluetooth audio streaming seems to work for me, but I can't control the music from the head unit, I have to 'forward' or 'reverse' via the phone.

My S4 recently got v4.4 so once the weather outside warms up a little I'm going to remove the phone (and address book) from my radio. Pull the radio fuse to completely shut down and restart the radio. And then re-pair the phone to the radio.

And hope it helps....

Correction on Moto X downgrade: some kind of downgrade may be possible but not for all partitions (gpt and motoboot are irreversible). One can downgrade the other partitions but there maybe some issues due to gpt and motoboot mismatch.

I still have 0 problems with my phone.

Re: 430N system and Moto X Bluetooth problems

Your problem is stemming from Android 4.3 & 4.4 now use MAP (Message Access Profile). At this point I don't know of a fix but usually someone creates an app that allows you to control the bluetooth. For Android I know of botifier which allows you to tweak what your bluetooth does. I have a rooted Galaxy S4 with kitkat 4.4.2 Android on it. I have a Wrangler with a 430N RHB. When I went from 4.3 to 4.4 I gained song information from Pandora and lost text messaging. At this point I also do not know of a firmware flash for Uconnect. There is a new Uconnect out but according to Jeep you cannot install on a 430N. When I was using 4.2 everything worked, song info/Text/etc.

BTW, the 50.XX upgrade has nothing to do with Uconnect or Bluetooth

Agreed... v50 is not the root of our problems.

Not sure if it's Samsung or Google, but someone seriously screwed up the Bluetooth on the S4 (and the battery life!).

I haven't rooted my S4... Yet... Very tempting since they started blocking creating new folders on the extSDcard (argh!).

I've lost text messaging and now the phone connection is very flaky. I definitely cannot initiate voice activated calls and incoming call pickup is sketchy and even today initiating a call from the phone, it would not transfer to the radio.

Has anyone tried "Botifier" on their Android phone to try to 'fix' the issues?
I'm thinking I'll give it a go.
