Check out some of their other reviews. I've found them to be complete morons in the past, but you may feel differently.

In their original review of the diesel they stood outside an idling GJC diesel and swore it didn't sound anything like a diesel, in the context of Jeep hiding it so well.

Umm ok...

Our diesels definitely sound the part, at least at idle or low speeds. That's actually one of the reasons I bought one, I don't consider it a negative. Their review actually had me think twice about the engine choice. Luckily, every_other_review said otherwise.

I should try this with two horses loaded in the float.
Sounds reasonable.

"I'd wager it's going to be a lot slower towing". Really?

There's something fishy about this test ...because this is the companion video...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hkvion-Ufis

And no Jeep is getting 39.2 mpg at 60 mph nor is it getting 47 mpg at 50 mph. That is VW Jetta territory.

I had a Land Cruiser that used to do much better than that. The truck that was pulling the flat bed though, that thing couldn't even break into double digits. :)

Edit: ok...I suspect his MPGs in the video are Imperial MPGs. An Imperial Gallon is larger than a US Gallon. 30mpg US is 36mpg Imperial. So his instantaneous averages are pretty typical. Notice the L/100km on the dash. Convert that to US mpg if you want the real values.

I've gotten close to 39 mpg at 55 on perfectly flat ground, 40 psi tires, warm weather, no wind. Of course, that's not sustainable. We all have to stop and go in the real world. It is only an indication of the engine's efficiency.

If you have a proper stretch of road, air up and try this. Accelerate to to 55, set the cruise, and reset the EVIC trip meter. If you are burning good fuel and its not too cold outside, you should see 37 to 38.5 mpg. I never did a good test at lower speeds because I detest holding back traffic. I did notice the instantaneous go above 40 when slowed in a few 45 mph zones. Try it before you say my observations are false. I'm in a 4WD ORA2 Limited. A 2WD would do better.

BTW, the VW TDIs will easily exceed 60mpg in the above scenario....its just not practical to hypermile all the time.

You crazy old imperial people with your possible mixed interpretations on measurements.
Gallons, US or Imperial; ounce, volume or mass; Horse Power US or Imperial?
A litre is a litre, millilitre is volume, gram is mass, a Kilowatt is a kilowatt.

Re: JGC Diesel Towing Test 0 - 60 mph in Colorado

Those values (in the video) are US Gallons. Here's the problem, the video is misleading. He is only giving us instantaneous readings, and the reported digits are the lowest at or around the time when he lifts off the throttle and/or the car's power train stabilizes at speed. And we all know those can vary wildly. If I found just road with just the right slope, I could come back and show you a similar video and 60 mpg at 60 mph.

For more realistic values, the owner of the video (or one of you) should instead report an average over 5-10 miles on cruise control.

I will get 28-30 mpg with the Jeep (3.6L V6) at 60 mph on cruise control and relatively flat ground, at 700 feet above the sea level but I doubt you guys will see 39 mpg under the same conditions. No doubt you'll get a few mpg better(30-35), but not 33% better.
