Airbag Warning Sticker Removal

Today I removed the airbag warning stickers from the visors of my WK2, and I am happy with the outcome. Since I couldn’t find a good guide I decided to share my observations and results.

I decided to do this now rather than to wait, because the presence of the stickers is more likely to leave a permanent mark the longer they have been in place and shielding exposure to UV bleaching from the sun, etc.

I have a 2014 Summit with the Midnight Galactic Abyss (or whatever the marketing term is for “black”) fake suede interior.

Procedure:
I used a heat gun set to 300°F, with a wide flat nozzle, to help peel the sticker off. Starting the edge was the hardest part; I used a pocket knife blade to help pick at the edge of the heated sticker to get it started. I peeled it off the rest of the way by pulling the sticker gently while applying heat to the leading edge. I was careful not to dwell on any spot too long; I kept my finger in the area and if it became too hot to touch I moved the gun to another spot. I then cleaned the sticker area of the visor with Goo Gone, with much attention devoted to the edges (human eyes are drawn to borders, which is the theory behind camouflage). I then cleaned the area with water and let it dry for an hour with the windows down and the sun roof open (Goo Gone is pungent and I didn’t want the smell in the interior). After the hour I followed up with the heat gun set to 350°F, with a small nozzle, to assist as I used my finger to rub off the remaining residue.

Note for anyone considering this: I didn't rush, and so I probably spent about 90 minutes on the task (not counting the hour I left it to dry). Others who are more experienced could probably do this in far less time.

A note about my photos:
I deliberately tried to obtain the angle/exposure that would show the results in the worst possible light. So, in actuality looks better than depicted. I know that most people considering removing these are doing so due to aesthetics, and therefore anything short of perfection is likely to bother them. I hope this helps others who may be vacillating about whether to commit to this irreversible procedure.

The “after” shot (again, this is the worst angle/exposure combo I could devise):

The back of the sticker looks like this after it has been removed (obviously some of the fake suede material is pulled up during removal):

Sticker removed, before Goo Gone:

Two angles of result after Goo Gone & water, but before final cleanup with heat gun:

So, this is legal?

Quickly—does anyone have any spare airbag warning stickers for sale?!

Haha.

Don't see the point of this, looks like all you did was burn the *fake suede* on your visors.

The fake suede was not burned/scorched in this process. Personally, I can't perceive where the stickers used to be (much less see sear marks). The variation you see in the "after" shot is due to the grain of the fake suede.

Brush your hand against it another way and it will change the way the light interacts with it.

Here are two shots of the same visor; all I did was brush my hand over it:

Is that a serious question?

If you knew the thermal dynamics of such materials, you would know that is a silly statement.

Looks great! Gonna do this soon to mine.

Please tell us about the thermal dynamics of such materials. :)

It probably does break some federal code ... but so does just about everything else these days.

I personally don't even notice the stickers in my Jeep. In fact I'll now have to check to see if I have them.

But, I must say the OP seems to have done a nice job removing them. Plus, he was smart to do it sooner rather than later.

Even though the $1,000 reward could come in handy, there is no way I would turn in a fellow JeepGarage member!!

Any member?

...but I thought "aiding & abetting" was a benefit reserved for Level IV/Lifetime members! Oh wait, or was the L4+ benefit "framing another person/hiding the body" while the lower levels had the aiding & abetting as well?

I get confused with all the perks—there are just too many to keep track.

The visor looks to be made of a cotton or wool based textile, which both have a 230-250 C ignition temperature. That is the point in which you would start to see it char/burn.

His nozzle heat gun setting was ~150 C, with the actual temperature reaching and fully penetrating the textile layer being far below that. You would literally have to press the heat gun nozzle into the material to even get it up to ~150 C. But of course there is no need for that. So no damage will result with this mod.

I don't believe Euro visors have the decals. But they would probably cost a kings ransom.
