USB doesn't charge phone?
I tried charging my phone in my '14 Overland for the first time using the front USB outlet, and while the phone indicated it was being charged, all it did was zap battery life from my phone. Never had a problem charging it anywhere else or with the same cable connected to a computer.

Anyone else seeing this?

What phone?
What happens when you plug it into the USB ports accessed from the rear seats (behind centre bin between driver and passenger seats)

HTC Droid DNA. Never had a problem charging anywhere else or in other cars (non-USB).

I'll try the rear USB... and my travel charger with the 12V plug.

Re: USB doesn't charge phone?
Apparently that front one in the cubby is only outputting 500mA

Re: USB doesn't charge phone?
Thanks for that info. That's a huge bummer. Seems like a huge oversight if that's the case since I believe most phone chargers require 1A if I'm not mistaken. I guess they only intended it for music connectivity??

Re: USB doesn't charge phone?
My Android charges just fine from the console USB...and I have a lot of leftover wall-warts from my Blackberry that won't charge it.

Fwiw. My iPhone 5 charges just fine from the console USB. I got a 2 inch lightning cable from Amazon so I wouldn't have 3 ft of cord to deal with...

Re: USB doesn't charge phone?
My iPhone 5 charges VERY slowly from the console USB in my 2011.

The front port is a USB spec port and as such is limited to 500mA. This is the design limit for standard USB to prevent damage to older USB devices like iPods and other music players. Most "full feature" phones (big screen, fast CPU) need more than 500mA if the screen is on and any apps are active (streaming music, navigation). Wall chargers and most car chargers are designed to exceed the USB limit. Most older data enabled USB ports follow the anemic 500mA standard. Some newer computers don't. Most Android phones detect a data USB port and limit the charge rate to prevent overloading the USB port. Notice that a wall charger will be reported as an "AC charger" in the Battery display in settings. A data USB and some 12v chargers will be detected as a "USB charger" and will take longer to charge...and may not keep up if your phone is being used heavily. Look for a 12v charger rated at 10w or 2amps or more. They typically charge at the AC charger rate.

Re: USB doesn't charge phone?
I've never had a port in a car console that didn't charge my iPhone very quickly and well...other than in the Jeep.

Re: USB doesn't charge phone?
500ma will still charge...just very slowly compared to the 1a recommended. If you're streaming and such, best is it will probably keep it from draining depending on how heavy your phone is being used

Again this is assuming the output is really 500ma per above

Re: USB doesn't charge phone?
Try the back seat ones, they seem to charge better... Charges my iPad no problem while driving.
No real big deal to run the cord from the back and in all reality its easier to plug in!
