Need Advice

I have a 2014 JGC Overland that I purchased in June of 2013. I only have about 3966 miles on it, as I am unemployed and have not driven it much. I purchased the Dealer warranty (extra) that gives me 12 oil changes and 5 tire rotations, but again, I only have about 4000 miles on it. Lightly driven to pick up kids from practice..here and there stuff.

I called the dealer today and asked his advice about an oil change. Most don't want you to even get one until 10,000 miles, and this won't cost me a thing, but it only has 4000 miles on it.

What would YOU do? Should I take it in? When I had my Mercedes, they said NOT to bring it before 13,000 miles, but it was a daily driver.

Your advice is appreciated.

I believe it's either 12 months or 10k miles. Which ever comes first. I change mine ever 7500 with synthetic, but I do it myself.

I'm in the same boat. Took delivery last April, and have 4,500 miles. My OLM says 40% left. I'll need to take it in for state inspection in a month or so. I plan on having the recall and a bunch of TSBs done. I'll have an oil change and rotate the tires then. I have 3 years of free oil changes, and could have them done at 3,000 mile intervals. But why waste the oil. Although the TSBs will clear up a few somewhat annoying software glitches, I really didn't feel the need to take the time to have them done right away. Haven't been back to the dealer since I took delivery. I check under the hood regularly, and keep the gas tank topped off, and enjoy a great owner experience.

Maybe I am still a little too old school - I can't handle the thought of more than 5k or 6 months between oil changes. I know, I know, a lot has changed over the years.

If it were me, I wouldn't hesitate at all to change the oil twice a year if you're going to be that low on mileage.

Is there any way to access the % of oil life in a 2012 Overland? I searched but only get the message that pops up on the screen when oil change is suggested.

Re: Need Advice

My dealer recommends oil changes and tire rotation every 5k miles, which I like. The first they want to see at 3k or 3 months. They even called to schedule it. We got a similar five free oil changes/tire rotations so it isn't likely they are making a lot of money off of it.

Personally, I would never wait 10k+ miles for an oil change, especially the first. I generally service my own vehicles and change oil every 5k with synthetic and a factory filter. YMMV.

Thank you. With the C300 I had...they said the oil they use is MADE to run 13,000 miles between changes, and the service mgr (who i trust very much) made a POINT to tell me to WAIT until 13k.

I will probably take it in this week. to get the oil changed and tires rotated.

Thanks all.

Re: Need Advice

My '12 gets an oil change every 6 months since do not drive it much. First four were free, bought four more for $65 ($16.25 ea) +tax.

Since I have a lifetime warranty that way it goes into the Chrysler computer and they checkout everything else at the same time.

No issues other than tires are down to 6/32nds at 14,000 miles but do not expect much from GoodYears.

There is no oil that is made to run 13,000 miles. It's all in the engine and how tight everything is that determines how long your oil will last. This is why oil analysis is a great tool in determining how many miles between changes is so good, you may be able to go 10k miles with your driving style and someone who is hard on there vehicle may only get 7000 miles.
