Manual Shifting the Automatic

In manual mode, is the shifting points still governed to some extent?

Meaning... does the car let you rev(rpm's) the gears or does it have an override that will automatically put the car in the gear it thinks is best?

I really don't like automatic but the pickings are slim for a SUV with good gas mileage.
Already have to give up the "truck" platform... now manual transmission!

You set the highest gear allowed, and it will pick anything underneath that. Not sure if there is an override if you get up towards redlining it though.
