1998 - BCM going bad. Can I swap it?

My wife's 1998 (says Z48 on the title??) Grand Cherokee has been having weird electric problems for a couple of years. The power windows would quit sometimes, the lights on the dash have become dim and the brights will sometimes flash, along with the interior lights coming on and the dash going to full brightness, for no reason at all while driving along. I finally gave up and trying to figure out the problem and took it in - the garage said the BCM was going bad. They then told me that unfortunately, they couldn't locate any new ones (they aren't made any more) and that they didn't think you could just swap one out, because they are one-time programed. I thought I would ask for a second opinion, and see if any one has been in the same predicament. Does anyone know if we can get one from a similar model and swap it out?

Thanks
Eric

Yeah probably not a good idea to just plug in a used one, they can reprogram stuff you might not want programmed. A new one will read your current settings and use those. Dealers usually don't have them, but a guy who is kind of famous in the Jeep community probably has them, he goes by Kolak, and can be reached at Kolak@aol.com
Heck, he might even already be on this forum
Or I'm sure you can find one on the internet somewhere

Oh and some of those problems could be related to loose door wiring or a shoddy headlight switch if not the bcm.

if pushing on (& holding) the headlight switch keeps the lights from flickering, you can fix the switch if you want -worked in ours

I also followed those exact instructions when I resoldered mine, worked great.
Similar concept works to fix bad VICs or GDMs.

Autozone carries the remanufactured control module that comes with a one year warranty on the California emissions standards. All solder joints are checked and resolver ed and the BCM for my 97 ZJ 4.0L 4x4 comes programmed to factory specs for the year and model you have. The net price after return of the removed unit is $189.99 (includes a $59.00 core replacement). Cardone guarantees that all units are 100% tested before shipping.

Just had my Jeep towed to my Mechanic because it either won't start, starts and runs smooth at idle but stalls one I drive off. Keeping the RPMs up does not help. Alternator recharges the battery which is only six months old and diagnostic gives off a P0351 error code. I instructed the mechanic to run though all mine parts shown in the ignition system diagram as Cardone recommends this method inasmuch as the computer is mounted on the 97 and 98 ZJ inside on the passenger side below the dash and is usually the last part to go bad because it is protected from under the hood hash conditions.

Goto he Autozone.com site and input your model information and then go to the diagram and advice section which provides some good advice to do in stages or that have easy to access inexpensive parts to replace first. If your handy with a Volt Ohm meter you can check the sensors to determine if the current is withing the proper range or find a component that is outside factory spec. Don't forget to check tour spark plugs and wires for cracks and any vacuum leaks or cracks around the destitute cap or rotor.
