My new Summit - 3 weeks and 2500 km later - The good and the not so good.

I've just returned from a driving holiday to the Gold Coast ( I live in Sydney) and I thought I'd share a few thoughts/opinions of a first time Jeep owner..

First the good.

1. Stellar fuel economy from the diesel. Averaged around 7.6 litres per 100 km. more than enough for the drive up plus a week of running around.
2. Excellent overtaking power at higher speeds. My previous car was an Audi Q5 petrol turbo. The Jeep has the same instant acceleration when putting the foot down over 100 kph.
3. Very comfortable touring car. I thought the ventilated seats were a bit of a gimmick when the dealer pointed them out, but on a long trip they were fantastic.
4. The clock, of all things. Within 100 metres of crossing the Queensland border the clock updated itself to EST. When we came back over into NSW it changed straight away back to daylight savings time.
5. The Nav speed limit display (when up to date). I was impressed with the way the Nav system would display school zone speed limits based on time of day. In Queensland it even handled differing school zone limits at times different to that of NSW.

Now the not so good.

1. Radio. My new 19 speaker premium sound system ( not Harman Kardon as I was originally led to believe) has such poor FM reception that I was left listening to either music from my iPhone or AM. I updated The uConnect software to 13.51.1, thinking it might fix the issue, but the reception is just as bad.
2. The Nav system. From reading the Garmin map version number it looks like the maps are from the first six months of 2012, so around two years behind. This is very apparent when travelling up the Pacific Highway. Also there's a selection for displaying safety cameras but none ever appeared on my screen. I just think it's a pretty poorly supported system. Especially when you factor in that it's receiving traffic information from SUNA over the FM band, but because Chrysler won't pay for encryption codes licence (as Honda,Holden etc have done) it can't decipher the information.
3. Diesel noise when cold or at idle. When I had the use of Limited diesel for a 24 hour test drive I was really impressed with how quiet the Jeep motor was. Like the Audi Q7 I had test driven there was just a quiet rumble when idling. Well, it seems that over the last 2500 km I've gone from Audi to Toyota. The Summit no longer rumbles quietly on starting but rather clack, clack, clacks it's way up to operating temp. It reminds me a bit of my son' old Hilux. It seems to settle down when warm, but it still sounds much noisier at idle than it did. My wife has noticed the difference too.

We'll, I'm back to the dealer soon to have my tow bar and trailer brakes fitted. I'll raise these issues with him.
Has anybody else experienced any of the above (especially the noisy motor)?

I am guessing your maps are the same data as this

http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/...psb525f589.png

I am unsure if that means 2nd quarter 2012, or 11th Dec 2012, either way they are outdated. There are supposed to be some map updates coming out this month. For what MY cars is anyones guess, assuming the come at all.

Radio reception is crap. On the rare occasions I listed to the radio I listed to Triple J, and get no issues. However the misses listens to WSFM and it is crap.

Re noise, there is a post by another (MY12) complaining about it.

Ours has been the same since day one, not oddly noisy.

The ventilated seats rock, so glad we got them.

Good luck! It is well known that Jeep are having problems supplying towbars - why did you accept delivery without? Did you pay full price of your car or withhold $2,000 pending fitting of the towbar?

The Nav speed limit display (when up to date).

Is this a new thing or could I turn it on in my 2012? Miss it as my old Navman did this and very useful.

This seems to be a growing problem. Also over here:

Suggestion is it might be the injectors....

My 2cents worth.
The navigation issues are a huge let down by Jeep Australia. Their updates generally are at least 12 months behind the releases. It's almost as though they wait until a new release, then buy the old version at a discount. Surely they can't be that stupid.... or are they?
In regard to the sound system, I would be ropeable if the premium sound was not HK. Isn't it advertised as such? Again, I would not be surprised as Jeep Australia tend to stripout some of the functionality that the USA versions have, and that causes many issues for us, as they don't appear to receive the same engineering quality control as the originals.
As for the clacking diesel when cold, it is common for Jeeps. I do think mine is now louder after 20,000klms than when I purchased.

I haven’t seen where they advertise the Summits sound system as HK.
This is what they do say.

• 19-speaker high performance audio system

The build sheet lists it as RCAS: 19 SPKRS High Perf Audio

Exactly my earlier point - if you are expecting a particular specification you need to get it specifically confirmed in writing from the dealer. You cannot assume anything.

It says harman kardon designed, so maybe not hk built. Though the sub has harman kardon printed across it.

It seems to me the problem the complaints are about is more obvious than just a bit louder, to the point the dealers are ripping engines apart to try to fix them. There does seem to be a problem with a small percentage of motors.

Re: My new Summit - 3 weeks and 2500 km later - The good and the not so good.

You are a 100% correct, Snuke. The Jeep Australia literature never mentions Harman Kardon. I guess I was misled by reviews published by the Australian motor press, when I was doing my research. They all listed a HK sound system as a feature of the Summit. I should have read the actual specs more carefully. A case of "buyer beware", I guess. :)

But the US literature does, are we saying the summit sound system for exports is different to the US summit?
