Intermittent Cruise Control

Hi! I have a 2003 2.7 CRD Grand Cherokee and the Cruise Control has become intermittent during use it will suddenly stop working and when that happens even the green cruise light dissapears however if I stop turn it off and back on again it will work for a while before cutting out again.
Any ideas?

My 1999 GC does the same exact thing, it's been doing it for a while, and I haven't been able too figure out why. It's very frustrating that the few times I try to use it doesn't want too work. I'll let you know if I figure out what the problem is. Good luck.

Likewise if I find the cause I will let you know it sounds electrical, hopefully someone on here will be able to help.

Is the cruise control operated by a vacuum on WJs?

When I had a Volvo, I knew a few people who had issues with their cruise control and if I remember right it was nearly always a vacuum pipe that was causing it and when they replaced the pipe(s) it worked again.

A vacuum leak would be my first guess too.

The green cruise light hints at electrical. I bought my 99 used and the PO used a cheap battery that boiled over and damaged the area under the battery tray. I found that one of the plastic lines were melted and was sucking air. I removed the battery tray and took one of the vacuum lines loose and put a very small amount of air pressure in the hoses and chased down the leak with soapy water in a squirt bottle. Got my cruise back that way. I never had the green light go out though. Sorry to bump this old thread.

Check this...........The wiring harness runs behind the valve cover in between that and the fire wall, it will sometimes ride right on top of a bolt and wear a hole in the wiring harness and short a wire inside, this wiring harness contains the TPS, IAT, ECT and many others.

Re: Intermittent Cruise Control

The cruise on WJ's is most certainly vacuum operated. If you A/c has intermittent issues of blowing through defrost vents under load( ACCELERATION) as well as cruise working funky. It is a simple fix if your willing to take about an hour of your time. There is a 4inch piece of vacuum hose under the battery tray that is connected to vacuum line that is hard plastic. You have to take out battery. Remove battery tray. Remove fuse/relay assembly. Under it all, you will see the cruise control vacuum motor etc. My hose was so brittle that it fell apart when I removed it. Used a 4ish inch piece of fuel line and everything works like a charm now. This is a common problem on the gas motors, on the CRD's I'm not real sure, but its worth a check.

Re: Intermittent Cruise Control

This is quite an old thread already and i hope that the fault was found. If not, i won´t expect anything with the vacuum in this case, because the green Cruise light is controlled by the PCM and should stay on, with or without vacuum. It could be a problem with the ON/OFF steering wheel switch, the clockspring, a problem with wiring or the PCM itself.
