2005 Grand Jeep Cherokee 4.7 L Fan clutch

Does any one now how to remove the fan clutch assembly from the water pump on a 2005 Grand Jeep Cherokee 4.7L? Driving me nuts!

I changed my water pump on my 05 GC 4.7...clutch nut loosens counterclockwise like normal..researched this cause I thought it may have reverse threaded, not the case. Don't remember wrench side..32mm? I soaked area with PBBlaster thinking corrosion would be a problem but not the case. I fitted an adjustable large crescent wrench and gave it a firm tap CCW and she loosened first try, not even having to hold the fan blades to keep from moving. If you need to stabilize the clutch, there are holes in the belt pulley where you can put an allen bolt through(a hex head won't clear outer rim) from the back and attach a length of chain from the driver's side of pulley to some area on the driver's suspension, etc. which will keep the clutch from turning. I had this all set up thinking I'd need it but, as above, happily surprised.

Edit..did you remove the water pump with clutch attached ??!

Hope this helps...

No I havent removed the water pump as of yet, I see no leaks or any giving in the bearings, but I wanted to test the fan clutch to see if it is my problem. I am still waiting on parts...ie lower rad hose and thermostat.

Gotcha...supposedly one way to test the clutch is to see if the fan will rotate more than 4-5 revolutions with the engine cold, giving it a good spin.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - VISCOUS FAN DRIVE
If the fan assembly free-wheels without drag (the fan blades will revolve more than five turns when spun by hand),
replace the fan drive. This spin test must be performed when the engine is cool

I can seem to get the nut on mine undone and the fan just free spins the bearings in my water pump seem fine. Ive also replased thermostat hoses radiator but she still over heats and idea how I can undo the bolt with a free spining fan or what the problem could be im pulling my hair out

I usually leave the belt on until the fan nut is loose. Really helps keep the fan from spinning. Grab the belt if it moves.

I've also seen water pumps that looked perfect from the outside, but once removed, it became obvious that the impellers had corroded away.

If the clutch ends up being the problem, I'd go ahead and replace the water pump anyway while you've got the fan off.
