catalytic converter
 
I need to replace my catalytic converter. I've looked through the posts and can't find instructions. How hard is it to remove? Any feed back will be greatly appreciated.

its not hard, but you will need the whole mid section of the exhaust. summit carries it for 500 and 850$. I think ones a high flow and the other is off road or some thing.

anyway, the transmission cross member needs to come out and the 2 bolts on each manifold need to (probably need to replace as they most likely snap). then you will need to unhook all four o2 sensors. I have had my mid section out like 5 times for various reasons. (mostly performance reasons)

Why can he just cut it out and have a new cat welded in?

That's what I'm wondering too...

Maybe the 3.7L exhaust system is ridic hard to work on/with compared to the 5.7L.

Youd still have to drop the section out to seal the pipe. There is no room to get a welder between the cat and transmission

True but he doesn't need to get a whole new mid pipe it will be cheaper to just by a new cat not a whole mid pipe. In fact he doesn't even need to buy a new cat. A catalytic converter when it fails just gets clogged (unless of course he crushed it while off-Roading or something or cracked it). He can just take out his catalytic and wash it and soak it in washing machine soap and water. Another old school trick taught to me by my auto shop teacher in high school lol.

Id be careful if washing them out. Our cats have a ceramic construction inside and it could be weakend if washed. Its very thin and easily broken. Its also harder to find cats in the size needed and the closest magnaflow cats are still 3 inches too long

Theres another reason I say get the whole pipe. Trust me, you dont wanna hack it apart. The entire mid pipe up to the cats and just past them has 3 layers to it. The outer 2.5 inch layer you see when you crawl under it. Then there is a metal mesh that runs from the front o2 sensors and INTO THE CATS and stops just after the rear o2's. Then there is a inner layer thats about 2.25 inch that also runs the same lenght as the mesh and it too goes into the cats. If you start to hack it apart you will go thru about 4 or 5 saw blades to get thru it and if you lose any of it, it will be a pita to get lined back up properly and then you'd have this rattle from the exhaust. Thats the number 1 reason I made completely new mids on mine. Trust me if you're gonna replace them, get the whole mid, the cats are built into the pipe.

No the exhaust systems are very similar with the 5.7's mids being a 1/4th inch larger in diameter when compared to the 3.7/4.7L's 2.5 inch pipe. Its how its constructed that makes it a pita to do yourself. Also the cost to have a shop replace just the cats is gonna cost more then buying the whole assembly and swapping it out yourself. Autozone has magnaflow universal cats but at 90 bucks a pop plus tax you're over 200 not including shop labor. There is a reason its sold as the whole mid and not just the cats, its not designed to be cut apart.

I want to replace the whole unit. I tried just replacing tge exhaust,but the bolts between the exhaust and cats were rust (the bolt heads came off). So in my stupidity....I cut the flange off right behind where you bolt the 2 together and connected it with a piece of exhaust tube and hangers. Now it rattles...not much. I need to replace the whole thing and start over. I found tge whole cat converter on rock auto got $300. The exhaust part I was going to piece together and have it welded (new thrush turbo muffler)

That's what I tried!! Failed miserably! Now I got to replace the whole unit.
