UConnect Via Mobile - Help Me Understand

So, UConnect via mobile uses my mobile phone's data to stream say, Pandora Radio, through the head unit (exactly what I want to do, yay!), correct?

But, does using Pandora "via mobile" require a UConnect Subscription!? I want to know what I'll loose when my 1 year runs out and I don't want to pay $20/month to keep it going.

Stealth Edit: While I'm at it, since I'm reading the options does the "remote CD" option mean that ordering the 8.4AN gets me no where to put in an audio CD?

Yes

1) It will require uconnect subscription (I think) because you must use the phone app to make it work... and if you dont have the subscription, I dont think you can log in to the app. Now that being said... iPhone? just plut it into the front console USB and start pandora. Bingo.. even shows album art

2) Remote CD player is installed inside the armrest... really stupid if you ask me. Just dump all your music onto an SD card and pop it in the slot :)

Android phones, not sure if that means good things or bad things. I don't really want to be tethered to an extra $20/month so the truck can use my PHONE's data connection to stream stuff. I understand I can do aux in, but in this day and age you'd think how you describe the iPhone working would work for iPhone/Android/Windows/Blackberry

If we can play google music intuitively through the stereo or the browsing of said SD card is easy then we're good. We have 62gb of music, and our collection grows weekly so it's a lot to manage.

(yes, we prune regularly!)

Good choice with Android ;-)

As far as Uconnect apps go, it does use your own phone's data connection, not the radio's built in modem. The benefit of the service is that you can control the app (i.e. Pandora) from the Uconnect screen instead of on your smartphone.

There is no Uconnect app for Google Music. I use Google music like you do and prefer it. The easiest way to use Gmusic is to pair your smartphone to the jeep's system over Bluetooth. Then just play it like normal and control it from your smartphone. Easy, and no Uconnect subscription required.

Can the jeep not control pandora and google music over the bluetooth connection? I've been in both a '14 lexus is250, and a '13 toyota highlander where you can use the steering wheel controls to control google music for track selection over bluetooth.

Also, the highlander supports streaming pandora via your phones mobile data plan once you connect with the appropriate app, no monthly fee required. It's silly that you'd have to pay a monthly fee to get data via your own mobile plan.

That's a good point! I downloaded the manual and it does indeed support track skip if the phone also supports it. So that's still pretty nice. So the Via Apps - while neat - shouldn't be necessary with Bluetooth and a modern smartphone.

it does work through BT as well. it just wont show the album art. The only real benefit of the app in Uconnect is that its easier to use than the phone.. thats it. I wonder how long it will take them to realize NO ONE WILL SPEND $20 A MONTH FOR NOTHING lol

ucon access is a joke of a service. I dont even get the point of the mirror button. Call them.. go ahead.. they are useless. They can tell you how to do something in your radio... or make an appointment. They cant give you directions, they cant tell you why your check engine light is on.. etc etc.. OnStar is far superior.

Yeah that's a good question. That's a lot of money for little benefit. Maybe they need to renegotiate with sprint.

Thanks for the all the answers here, looks like BT will let me do EVERYTHING I WANT without using the UConnect App. (Though remote starting the truck from the phone is nifty!)

For $20/month it's crazy, plus sprint coverage where I live is.... not stellar. I doubt the 'app' start will work at home or the lake, but probably will at the wifes work where it counts.

Thanks for all the great info guys!

looks like the "via mobile" portion of the uconnect system has a 5 year expiration after purchase. To me this means you will get updates and have access to the via mobile apps even without the $20 a month. It should be lifetime.

Hopefully they extend it even past the 5 year mark to always be up to date with apps...

Re: UConnect Via Mobile - Help Me Understand

i saw that as well.. but thought that if you dont have the uconnect access subscription, you cant sign in? .. and in the car.. will you be able to get to the apps?

Has anyone had their subscription run out that can confirm this?

Re: UConnect Via Mobile - Help Me Understand

My subscription expires in 1 week so I will see then but I did just get off the phone with the Uconnect Access people and was told that this Via Mobile has nothing to do with the other Uconnect features and will still be able to access after. As long as you have update 13.48 or greater.

So we'll see.

Mine never worked before but then I was finally walked through linking my Pandora and Slacker to my Via Mobile profile and they showed up. Interesting.......fingers crossed.
