Key proximity and engine starting

I was wondering. You don't need to plug your key in to start the GC, so if you hopped out of the car, to check ie tyres, can someone still jump in the car while your not looking, start the car and drive off? I would assume if you have the car key in your pocket whilst outside the car, it would only get a meter or so away from the key and stop? Am I correct here?

First, I would not be in a neighborhood where someone would try to steal my car while I am checking my tires. Secondly, you can get quite far away while it is running. I've walked down to my mail box which is at least 50 feet from my garage.
To start the engine the key must be inside the vehicle.

When you get out of the car with the key, it will beep to notify you, but will not shut off until you push the start button

For safety reasons the car will not shut down on its own if you get out and walk away from it. The thief that jumps in and takes off with it could sue Chrysler if the car shut down and he or someone else got hurt as a result of that.

This is a great ? The other day i went to the post office, A small town only 600 pop. anyway i went inside leaving the car running only 25ft away and in sight.

So if someone jumped in how far will someone get and i have the fob !!

I've driven over 10 miles without having the key in range or with me. I dropped off my wife at the mall with her sisters and drove home only to get the constant fob not detected message all the way home which reminded me she had the keys in her purse. The car stayed on the entire time with nothing impacted.

Works just like a Prius. Once started, the only way it'll shut off is if you push the start/stop button or run out of gas. Key fob in or out of range makes no difference.

Re: Key proximity and engine starting
Where I live it's a misdemeanor to leave a running vehicle unattended with the doors unlocked. That's probably one of the reasons you can't remote start a car with the doors unlocked. Just this week a guy got out of his car to use the ATM and was less than ten feet away when some DB jumped in and stole it. Went for a joy ride and wrecked it, then took off on foot. All this happened in an upscale shopping area.

Re: Key proximity and engine starting
The key fob must be inside the vehicle to start it, even if you are standing just outside the drivers door with the fob and reach in to start it will not start, the fob must cross the threshold of the door and remain inside to start, but once it is started the key fob does not need to be in the Jeep to stay running.

Re: Key proximity and engine starting
If the battery died or the fob malfunctioned you don't want the Jeep to shut off.
