I need new tires

Almost 50k miles on my OE Goodyear Forteras in 265/50 R20 size. I've been generally satisfied, and no doubt the tread would wear to 60k, but they are starting to hydroplane badly so need to be replaced soon.

Mostly highway driving, I probably corner faster than most, and I do a lot of winter driving (ski trips). The Forteras have performed reasonably well. I like a quiet tire. My only complaint until now is that they do tend to seem out-of-balance when cold.

I like this vehicle a lot and plan on keeping it at least another 50k miles, maybe a lot more.

I've been running about 40psi in these tires to get the best fuel mileage and cornering traction, and have not had a problem with uneven wear.

I'd like to hear what other Jeep guys are running and how they like or dislike what they have.

If you are looking for a highway/good in snow tire take a look at the Nokian WRG 3 SUV. It just came out for suv and i almost got but just dont do enough snow travel to justify. It is like a snow tire but you can leave on year round and fine for summer also. Stay away from the bridgestone i had those on for about a month never could get them to road force balance properly and they develop flat spots sitting over night and shake for about the first 10 miles of driving in the mornings. Hard as a rock also you feel every single little bump. Not a lot of good choices in the 265/50R20.
Not sure about the perellis was wondering sbout those but not seen any reports on them.

Re: I need new tires

I went through two sets of the Pirelli Scorpios in my last vehicle, a 2009 Ford Expedition. They were good tires but didn't wear past 35k miles in that much heavier vehicle. And they are a lot more expensive than the Forteras. I recall one night on dry pavement when I needed to put them to a brake test and they brought that big truck down very quickly. They also did well in snow but not so well on ice.

I'll be replacing my Fortera's this summer, likely with Nitto NT421Q. I'm at 32K with a lot of tread life left, but will replace before the end-of-summer vacation travel since I'd likely need to do that in the fall anyway given the miles I pile on.

Why the Nittos? I haven't found any reviews on line. Discount Tire has them by special order for $191, a good value based on their mileage warranty.

jim in pa,........I am also in pa an just ordered a summit for myself, just with the 6cyl. I understand the factory tires are road tires an not very good for snow or heading out to deer camp in December. Did you ever run the all terrain tires for our area?....I realize that the need for hunting on unpaved camp roads is about .001% of the tires life, an I sure don't want a noisy tire or a hard riding tire that shakes at every road crease. Is there an all terrain tire made for me?......sonny:confused:

I just like the tire and the folks who are running them have said nice things. There is a thread here about them. They have a deep tread with long tread-life but have good all-around characteristics. There is not really much in the way of online reviews because they are a new tire, especially in the eastern US. I saw billboards for them near LA, but distributors around here don't even know about them. I'll probably be buying from Discount Tire online and having my independent guy install them.

My Summit came with Forteras...I have no AT tire experience and haven't felt the need for them because the only "off road" I ever do is to get to my utility trailer on my property and the so-called "parking lots" at some horse shows that are a little sloppy. 98% of my driving is highway and I pile on the miles. Honestly, I have had zero issues with the Forteras including negotiating the snow we had this past winter with only a little more than half of the tread left. But if you are in a more upland area, you might want to consider something more capable for winter.

The Nokian is not readily available here. The closest place that carries that brand is an hour drive one way. They don't list them on their site either, so I'm sure it would be special order, retail price plus shipping.

I'm leaning towards the Nittos. I read the thread here on them and everyone seems to be impressed. The price is right when considering the tread warranty. Now if I could find a coupon somewhere to save a few bucks....

I bought my Nokians on tiresbyweb.com since my local dealer couldn't order them. He installed them for $100 and questioned his supplier when he saw them. I have 7K miles on them with no complaints.

Re: I need new tires

That would run me about $300 more than the Nittos, a lower mileage rating, and a lot more difficulty in collecting a warranty if I needed to. Better to buy local.
