Vulnerable DEF injector wiring!

Just took my 2014 JGC Overland Diesel on some easy ranch road trails in west Texas, broke it! The DEF warning came on saying I had 200 miles till engine shutdown! By the time I got to a place where there was a dealer I only had 40 miles of restart life left! Not cool, and I was still a couple hundred miles from home. So found a dealer to get it looked at, apparently I ran over some brush and jammed a stick up near the DEF injector and tore the wiring loose! Think now I should have got the skid plates but would they have covered the tubing and wiring bundle in area two ft. or so behind the passenger front wheel? Anybody know if skid plates would have protected this vulnerable area of Diesel powered JGC?:(

I feel as though I read in another thread that the skid plates do not cover the DEF injector/wiring but I can't seem to find that post. I have skid plates but I'm not sure where I would be looking to check and someone will probably be along with an answer before I'm able to get under my truck and check.

The skid plates DO NOT protect the DEF injector/wiring.

The other thread talking about this problem:

http://www.jeepgarage.org/f222/servi...ler-72634.html

Posts there also say the skid plates don't cover the DEF components. A little disappointing.

Thanks for the info guys. May have to rig something up to get protection! I was really not doing anything too serious in the 4x4 department as the vehicle is to expensive and new to tear it up!

In the link sterno posted are a couple pix of a screen someone else rigged to protect it. I'll probably be doing something similar if my Jeep ever arrives. I don't do any serious off-roading either, but I do hunt, and I do go through heavy brush sometimes. It really should come from the factory able to handle that, but it doesn't.

Thanks for the reference info,

Re: Vulnerable DEF injector wiring!

The DEF hoses are hanging there waiting to be grabbed by brush. The injectors are delicate and waiting to be hit by rocks, ice, water, brush, whatever. The skid plates do not protect any of it. I am very glad I recognized this before I broke something. I added an expanded steel screen over the hoses and injectors (see the link below).

I have a 1995 Grand Cherokee that I have ultimate confidence in taking nearly anywhere: brush, rocks, ice, snow, water... My plan was to do the same with the new vehicle. However, I am very concerned that something will break or cause the vehicle to go into limp mode or some form of lockout. Very disappointing.

Seems there is some legitimate (albeit limited) aftermarket potential for a vendor to come up with an inexpensive stamped steel mini skid plate to address this problem until/unless Jeep steps up and does the right thing... I know I'd pay 40 bucks for a properly engineered and fabricated bolt-in piece.

Guys, personally I think it should not be a responsibility for you guys, but for Chrysler to redesign the set up. It seems to be bordering dangerous if as a result of damaging the injector, you may be left stranded miles away from civilization. Jeep advertise its products (specially the trail rated ones) as adventure products. If your SFU is left immobile because of this, and you are far away in the outbacks, it would be beyond annoyance. It would be unsafe.

Question is do you want to wait for them to do this or do it yourself? I am planning to put some protective cover on mine even though I don't go off road that much.
Agree that this is a real bad issue if out and about and break the injector off...

Found this on MOPAR site:

Diesel Exhaust Fluid System - COVER, Urea Skid Plate
Part # 68164032AB

No image available $51.85
It would be nice if Jeep would do a TSB and install these if it is what I think it is.
