2014 V6 Pentastar MPG

The odometer just clicked over 5,000. The last 1100 was a road trip thru the backroads/mountains of New Mexico, Colorado and Utah (maybe 15% city driving). On the trip, we averaged 24 MPG.

BTW, my Summit is a 4X4.

Given the mileage I'm getting, there's no way I can justify paying $4,000, plus the added cost of diesel fuel and oil changes for the diesel engine.

And the Pentastar gets up and goes.

I freakin' luv this car !!!

I feel exactly the same way. I love the v6 with the 8 speed.

Justify Diesel? One word. Towing.

I don't tow.

But, I see your point.

Re: 2014 V6 Pentastar MPG

When I test drove the V6 and the diesel, I immediately noticed that the diesel had a much more peppy driving dynamic than did the V6. I could get my hemi to drive that way but I never floor it when the light turns green; if anything I'm used to finessing the pedal so my hemi doesn't eat so much gas. Anyway I mean overall the diesel seemed more fun to drive for me.

Of course it doesn't hurt that diesel is $0.35/gal cheaper than 89 octane here. :)

But that's great that you're happy with your Summit. At the end of the day that's all that matters. [emoji106]

The other day in our area diesel was almost $0.40/gal more than 89 octane.

Everyone will have different reasons for selecting a particular engine. You have obviously picked the one that suits your particular needs. Others will gladly spend the extra dollars for the diesel for their particular needs.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying your Summit. It's a beautiful car

Another: v8 performance.

Not again. Performance ? The V6 gasoline engine is faster than the diesel.
We already covered that in another thread.

Hmmm, I am familiar with the thread of which you speak, but I came away with the opposite conclusion. If your main criteria of "performance" is red-lining your Jeep off the line like you were at the track, then yes the V6 will be faster. I never drive that way.

But like I said earlier, it's easy to see the difference; don't take some website's word for it. Test drive them back to back.

Sorry, but in the real world, on the streets, there's a night and day difference. 400+ ft lbs at 1800 rpm of torque move the vehicle effortlessly...there's a huge difference in drivability.

FYI...mine has a tuner on it and I'm running 0-60 in 6.7s. I know that's not a fair comparison but a turbo motor is cheap and easy to turn up. I still get 32 mpg at 65 mph highway and 26-27 overall.

The Pentastar is a great motor, a good performer, and certainly a good choice...but the diesel option, for some, is worth the $4k. You get the stouter tranny and lots of v8 grunt with way better than v8 economy.

Hopefully that becomes a nationwide trend, then I would hop (that's the Easter pun for the day) on the '17 diesel. Until then I will stay happy with my V6.
