Rapidly deteriorating oil life

Picked up our new Limited EcoDiesel on March 1st and after 2500 miles oil life was at 5%. Provided 8 quarts of Pennzoil Ultra Euro L 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil (as per manual) to our local dealer for an oil and filter change. 80 miles later, life is 88%. We had taken one easy 1200 mile trip before this oil change and just city driving for the rest.

Are there any ideas as to whether I should be concerned? Is it simply too many short trips or something more sinister?

Apparently there is a software update for the short oil life problem - released a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks for the news! Do you have any reference for the software update info?

Awesome news! Many thanks for the info. I will keep everyone informed regarding the process of getting the PCM flashed...

Re: Rapidly deteriorating oil life

I just assumed that our oil change interval came up at around 5,000 miles because our Jeep sat in a parking for over 2 months last fall waiting for the DEF tanks to arrive. I took it into the dealer for the oil change just to avoid any warranty hassles later on.

I'm at 4k miles / 4 months ownership and 18% remaining oil life. I'm not certain my oil life is declining too rapidly, but I'll get it flashed next month.

I'm at just over 1400 miles and 52% oil life. I'll have it checked this week because the service DEF message just popped up too.

Re: Rapidly deteriorating oil life

Had the software fix done today (took 10 min) and will monitor changes to the 'oil life' issue. Life was going down 1% for every 10 miles driven. Leaving for Denver tomorrow (1200 miles round trip) and will report on the slope of this line when I return. Software patch did not alter the oil life % from before patch application (82% after 175 miles).

Many thanks for the info helping me get to a fix!

Re: Rapidly deteriorating oil life

I had my update done showing 16% remaining. 1800 miles later it still shows 16%

Obviously a problem

Re: Rapidly deteriorating oil life

After my 1350 mile trip (and 1600 miles after my premature oil change) oil life still shows 82%. Only explanation is that 1600 miles of mostly highway driving has reduced oil life less than 18% and that the 82% value will begin changing soon or...
there is still a problem with the oil life indicator. Any ideas?

Re: Rapidly deteriorating oil life

I had mine reprogrammed back when the update first came out and I have seen normal reduction since then. I have seen after the first oil change where it did not reset properly.

You could reset it and subtract the current amount as it is cumulative.
