UConnect 911 Button
So, I used the 911 button on my rear view mirror last night. Nothing major to worry about. Just a road rage driver causing havoc. The system worked great. However, it took about 25 seconds or so to connect. May be faster to just use your cell phone.

When the dispatcher answered, she said that she didn't hear the first part of what I was saying because "the computer was talking". It got me thinking about what information the vehicle is sending to the dispatch center. And is that data digital so it shows on their answering console or, as it sounds, an audible announcement that the dispatcher hears.

Anyone have any idea on how the system works?

Looks like I found the answer. Very interesting.

As someone who has answered calls from the Chrysler system I have to say it works well. It did not take long for the computer to do its thing and I was able to connect with the driver of the vehicle. The information that comes in is spoken pretty quick, and then you can get to a person if available. The only information that pops up on our phone system is the cellular phone information. If there is no person on the other end of the line, the information can be repeated and help can be sent.

I'm a telecom engineer and I've dealt with numerous PSAPs. I find it interesting how the system works and what data it sends. I think Chrysler could have done better with some of the advanced telematics features though. It's not on par with OnStar.

Re: UConnect 911 Button
OnStar may take in more information, but honestly it's mostly useless in the 911 setting. I just need to know location and injuries to get help started, I don't need to know delta-v as it does not play into what I'm going to send. Others may feel different. I do like that I can speak to the occupants in the car as they provide the best information. Both systems do that, just in different ways.
