Is A/C turned on with heater?

Hi,
I've been told that A/C compressor is always on when you turn on heater in winter. Even when A/C button is OFF.

Is it so? How does A/C work.

Does heater affect fuel consumption as A/C does? Is it related with defrost setting?

My WJ 2003 Laredo does not have Climate Control, it's a simple A/C.

Thanks.

A/c compressor is only on when A/c is on and never when Heat is on

Most of the older vehicles with manual hvac controls the a/c compressor will cycle when set to defrost and bi level. It shouldn't cycle when set to heat. This helps to lube the compressor and seals when you're not running the a/c - like during winter.

What year jeep you have? I know with my jeep
anything with zone on windows (heat or cool) A/C is on.
on manual zone or heat the A/C is manual
with the auto heat or zone it does it by itself.

defrost uses the compressor as well. even in the winter.

If it is on, why does it have AC button? to use in on settings other than Defrost?

The A/C button actually kicks on the compressor making it colder in the car.

Re: Is A/C turned on with heater?

The A/C is indeed always on in Defrost position, in Manual or AZC system. The reason for this is that the A/C removes moisture out of the air and in this way removes faster any mist on the windshield. (you can see the condensed water dripping underneath your car)
When heater is used no extra power is taken from the engine, because the heater uses the cooling liquid from the engine.( this heat is in fact energy we have put into the engine to function, and we completely loose it into the air by the radiator) Only the thermostat valve will open a bit less, because we substract already some heat from the cooling liquid with the heater core.

The AC button is there so that you can have A/C in the positions that do not include defrost (ie, any settings besides "full defrost" and "foot + defrost"). If you're not in a defrost setting and the A/C button is NOT pressed, it simply acts as a vent and lets in the outside air (but it will heat that air if you turn the dial to heat).

Like Frango said, the compressor kicks on when in defrost to remove the moisture from the air to help w/ the defrost.
