ORC Module Shortage

Have 2014 GC which has been diagnosed with a bad ORC (Occupant Restraint Control) Module by two dealerships. This causes a constant stream of messages at the EVIC related to air bags requiring service, ACC requiring service, and seat belts. These are accompanied by audible beeps, chimes, and so on; and the cruise control is completely nonfunctional. These of these problems began within a 30 second period about 250 miles into a 500 mile road trip. When I reached my destination I took the GC to a dealership who made the initial diagnosis of a failed OCR module but said the part was on national backorder and replacement would not be available for two weeks. Suggested I take the Jeep to my local dealership when I returned home. Second dealership made the same diagnosis about two weeks later and said replacement would not be available for two weeks. The two weeks went by and I when I hadn't heard from them I gave them a call. Now they tell me the replacement won't be available until mid June, about 10 weeks after the initial diagnosis.

I like my Jeep very much, but I liked it a lot more before the ORC module died. Before this I would not have believed that Chrysler would not had a supply of service parts on hand.

Anyone else having ORC module problems or service part availability problems? If so how did you handle it?

I am clear of this problem, so far, but this is not the first mention of this problem and I believe the delay is due to a supplier switch? I am only posting this as a directional to get you going.

Good luck.

Re: ORC Module Shortage

I'm having the same issue with my 2014 GC Overland, which has 18,000 miles on it. On a trip this last week from Minneapolis to Denver. My Air Bag service indicator light came on and my cruise stopped functioning. I called Chrysler uConnect and they got me in touch wit a service advise in California. He said I should stop at a dealership and have them fix the issue. I did stop at a dealership in Omaha and they did a diagnosis on it and said the ORS module failed and they did not have a warranty technician in house to fix it at the time,as it was late in the evening.

I did bring it into a dealership in Denver on Monday and they said they would have a ORC module available in the next two days and I should leave the car there, as it is not safe to drive it. The technician said if I was in a front end collision by air bags would not deploy. I was returning to Minneapolis Monday morning and would take the car now and give them a call on Tuesday to see if the module was in. I did call on Tuesday and they said the module was on backorder and it could be several weeks. Anyways to make a look story short, I did end up calling Chrysler again and they got by dealership in Minneapolis to order me a ORC module. My dealership in Minneapolis said it will be 3 to for weeks until they see an ORC.

It is hard to believe that Jeep as a critical safety part on backorder. what are they putting in the new Jeeps coming of the assembly lines.

I,would like to know what the last eat deliver status on these modules and has anyone with this same issue received a replacement ORC module?

ORC Module Shortage

Same exact issue here. OCR module failed on a 500 mile trip probably half way through it ... Recently there is a lot of people popping up with this issue.

My jeep has been stuck at the dealership for over a week now. Was not even being offered a loner.

I would advise everybody to file a complaint with NHTSA. There is something systematic going on here and driving w/o airbags is definitely a safety issue.

Re: ORC Module Shortage

ORC Module was replace on 5/28, about 7-8 weeks after the initial failure. Neither the original dealership in WI who diagnosed the problem, nor my local dealership here in OH who made the repair, mentioned that the failed module created a safety problem, but I was suspicious that that the air bags might not work correctly had I been involve in an accident. The constant flashing and beeping made driving the vehicle somewhat unpleasant.

I'm very happy to say that all of the related problems were resolved by the module replacement and the Jeep is again a joy to drive.:o

Roki & Randy, I see both of your build dates are 4-8-'13, if I'm not mistaken. I wonder if that has anything to do with the failure. My build date was 4-6-'13. Hope it's just a coincidence.

Interesting, my build was also 4/13.

My dealer would not release the car to me unless I would sign a statement that I'm aware of the fact that if I will get myself into an accident I might die or be seriously injured due to SRS being inoperational.

Obviously I didn't argue with them and let them have the car.

That being said I would imagine ... yes the car is unsafe to drive. It is mechanically sound but if you would get yourself into an accident you will not get ANY benefits of restrain systems (airbags).

It is really surprising that a lot of those failures started to happen from early May or so. I'm finding hard to believe this is just a coincidence. I actually had my recall done for ABS / dash done probably 1 month before this happened. They did software upgrade of a lot of pieces at the time. Wonder if the issue was always there and it was just uncovered by the software updates.

Re: ORC Module Shortage

I wonder if this was the problem I had with my eary build 2014 GC Limited (4/13). I had ABS/airbag lights pop up while driving off the dealership's lot. Fortunately there wasn't a shortage of parts at the time, and the problem was fixed in a day after the parts came in. The dealership had no problem with me driving the vehicle in this condition.

After reporting this last year on this site, some inferred I was a wimp because I didn't feel comfortable driving my new GC with the possibility of not having operating air bags.

Re: ORC Module Shortage

I had a build date of 6/13 and recently had the same problem. I was about 170 miles in on a 200 mile trip when my dash started going crazy. The nearest dealer gave me bad information when he informed me that the airbags would work, but my local dealer later informed me that they would not have. They called the district rep and he authorized a paid rental while it was waiting for the part. They didn't even want it on the road because of safety concerns.

I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the loose ground issue on early builds?
