845RFE Temperature

Just picked up a new 14 GC Altitude and I am a little concerned with the transmission temperatures being show. The average temperature is 200!!! Is this normal for this transmission? Seems hot to me. What temps are you guys seeing with this transmission?

Yes, normal for the ZF transmissions. In fact, they have a transmission fluid "heater" warmed by the coolant to help it reach warm temps sooner.

Interesting. Thanks

Re: 845RFE Temperature

194F is the designed temperature and the Life Guard 8 fluid is fully synthetic and good to 300F. Whether the clutch material and solenoids survive that temp is a different question...

Glad to find a thread on this. I saw few others that I'll read through.

I just picked up my 2014 JGC Limited Diesel on Friday. On the way home in stop-n-go traffic on a 50 deg day, tran temp got to 199.

I tow a #5000 boat in the summer, so this concerned me. In past tow vehicle, 2007 Yukon XL Denali, tran temp would be about 160 in the conditions I listed above. Towing in summer 200 tops. So JGC at 200 on a cool day and not towing is concern.

Understanding an 8 spd trans prob runs a little hotter, as does a Diesel engine.

I have the 3.6L V6 and on avg I'm around 186 at highway speeds. In traffic 192. I drove up Mt. Washington this fall manually shifting between 1st and 2nd a few times and the highest it got was 214 (temp 60 at base and 45 at summit - perfect clear day too!)

Actually you can see the cooling strategy if you watch the temps. It's interesting. Mine will climb during acceleration, stay there for a while (197-199F, occasionally 201F), then suddenly (and I mean suddenly) fall to around 186F. It will then climb again slowly to around 195F. It might gyrate around like this for a while.
