P0403 with new EGR - P0406 with old EGR
05 WK with 5.7

When I first bought the Jeep, I immediately did a complete tune up.
New plugs, EGR, PCV, air filter, serp belt, & temp sensor (all that I can think of at the moment)

One day, it started running rough (long story short.... some dips*** previous owner put tape over the CEL.). Changed out the crank position sensor and cleared the codes.

After a few days the CEL came on and got the P0403 code.
Took the new one off and reinstalled the old EGR (cleared the codes) to see what would happen, and now I get the P0406 code.

Is there something else I need to check?

Re: P0403 with new EGR - P0406 with old EGR
I'm having the same identical problem on a 2005 Grand Cherokee. I replaced the ERG due to a P0406 code and nor the new one is throwing P0403. The hanress looks ok I have verified both grounds at the EGR connector and 5V on the connector as well. There are still 2 more wires that I have to check since I do not know their signal (marked EGR signal on the schmatic. I have to pull the connector off the PCM to do this. Is there any thing else that could be the problem? Please help.

what brand of EGR did you get?

Mine was a Dorman. I took it back and will be trying a Duralast to see if still occurs.

Re: P0403 with new EGR - P0406 with old EGR
Mine is a Dorman as well from Rock Auto. I may try a Standard Auto EGR. I think I have read where Dormans have worked fine, but it does seem strange that the EGR did not fix the problem and presented a new code. I still have some fault location work to perform, but before I buy a PCM I think I will try another EGR.

Since I've been using the Duralast one from Autozone, I've not had either code come up, BUT I did have P0430 recently pop up.

I just can't win!!!!

Re: P0403 with new EGR - P0406 with old EGR
I went through the factory manual and it led to a PCM replacement. It didn't fix the P0403 code but it was worth the 25% restocking fee to rule out the PCM. The JGC is in a local shop but I think they are baffled as well. I may order a Mopar one from Amazon and see how that works. So you had at least temporary success with a Duralast? Did you mean P0430 or p0403? How many days before it threw the code again? I'll be sure to keep you posted.

I got the P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2) that took a few days to pop up.

I don't have either P0403 nor the P0406 now.

Thanks, I'll be trying an EGR valve other than Dorman! Sorry to hear about the new p0430.

Re: P0403 with new EGR - P0406 with old EGR
Got it fixed. The local mom and pop shop had it for a week and could not figure it out so I took it back and sent it to the dealer. Well they found it. The ERG connector pins were pushed back into the connector housing and spread. I checked for this and since they were all even I did not think that was the problem. However, I should have figured out that that might be the case since everything checked out good. A scan too that would have allowed me to activate the solenoid while plugged into the EGR connector probably would have clued me in to the problem as well. The dealer charged $85 for fault location and another $135 to "close" the female pins and push them forward and lock them in place. Sure that's a ridiculous amount of money fro what they did but I'm happy it was not the wiring and its fixed. Hopefully this will help someone in the future.
