How much more "cooling" from Tow Group?

I live in Phoenix, and have always bought the tow group for the "heavy duty cooling". In the past, this meant a larger engine oil cooler, a trans cooler, and, sometimes, a larger capacity radiator, along with the more powerful alternator. I don't really tow and won't off road with this one. I found a 2014 with everything I want, except no tow package. For a daily driver, especially in 115 degree summer heat, will I be okay with the standard cooling? I will plan on more frequent fluid changes to help combat the heat. Thanks.

Personally, I'd keep looking for one with the tow package. It definitely will help where you live.

I concur, I have the HD stuff as part of ORA-2 and during last year's vacation thru some high altitude deserts of Colorado and Wyoming and off-road action the car never had overheating issues. But it never got quote that hot either.

Which engine makes a difference on what is included with the factory tow package... ;)

Thanks Jim. Yea, in the past the 6 had less additional cooling than the Hemi. And, I had always bought the V-8. Now, I'm looking at what I need, not what I want (what's happening to me), and the Pentastar 6 looks like all I need for daily driving.

So, thinking V-6 only, I'm not sure what the Pentastar 6 Tow Group provides in non-towing additional cooling.

Would it be safe to say more than without the tow package?

Not necessarily. I'm not sure about the MY14s, but in previous years, if I'm recalling clearly, the V6 with factory tow didn't get any additional towing. Remember, the V6 has lower towing limits than the V8. If you do the "build" feature on the Jeep website, you can see the details of the tow packages for the given configuration.

I was looking information up because I want to add the trailer hitch to my 14' Altitude. It already came with the wiring/plug, just need the hitch install. However, here is the difference when getting tow package versus not. It does indicate heavy duty engine cooling with tow package!

I see that part of the trailer tow package is the following:
  • 7 and 4 Pin Wiring Harness
  • Class IV Receiver Hitch
  • Delete Rear Tow Hook
  • Full Size Spare Tire
  • Steel Spare Wheel
  • Heavy Duty Engine Cooling
  • Rear Load Leveling Suspension
Looking up my 2014 Altitude model standard features (without tow package) I see the following trailer/tow information:
  • Towing Capacity - Maximum:6200
  • Trailer Sway Damping

Yes Jim, I'm familiar with the Jeep build feature on their website. From what I've always seen, it states HD engine cooling with the tow package. It does not go into how much or how little that is.

If I'm not mistaken, it comes with an oil cooler and that's it.

Not trying to argue anything here but all I can say is that I haven't run across anything that states HD engine cooling is not part of the tow package with a 3.6L V6. This would be a good question for Milous or Marlon.

From a Jeep spec sheet it lists coolant capacities as follows...

3.6L V6 = 14.0 qts
5.7L V8 = 14.5 qts
3.0L V6 = 12.0 qts

I assume that's all standard coolant capacities. Don't know if/how the tow package alters any of that.

Not much difference between the gas V6 and V8. Maybe Jeep feels that 14.0 qts for the 3.6L V6 is adequate to meet max towing requirements. I am surprised that the diesel has the smallest coolant capacity of all engine offerings. That doesn't seem right.

Diesels don't generate as much heat for the same amount of work performed. They are inherently 30% more efficient.

The good news is that Pentastar owners have great cooling capacity based on the data.
