How to: Remove roof rack crossbars on WK

today i removed my roof rack cross bars and i didnt see a formal write up on here so i took pics of my progress.

first you have to remove all of the large bolts on the top by twisting them off. they will loosen the metal brackets under the bars so i put shop towels on my roof to keep the metal from scratching my paint.

then you have to remove the plastic end caps on the rails. they come off my squeezing them and lifting up.

after you remove all 4 or 2 if you dont want to take them all off. you need a #27 torx driver to remove the two screws in each end cap.

after you remove the two screws per end cap you can pull the bottom cap off of the roof rails.

after then end cap is removed you can slide the cross bars off by moving them up a little bit on each side. you can take both off from the front or you can use the same process and take the rear one off from the back.

then when they are off all you have to do is put the end cap on screw it down and put the top back on and you will begin saving alot of gas right away!

wanna know an easier way. undo the large nut on top, that loosens the metal bracket underneath it, then slide the bars in opposite ways on each side of the roof, and pull up.

all you have to do is step #1.

no gas saved by doing this BTW.

i travel 45 min highway every day to school and back. before taking them off i averaged 21.3mph and after taking them off i average 23.4mph at 60mph. obviously it is not going to save gas on city roads.

i drive 40 miles round trip on the interstate to work everyday. nothing changed with mine. maybe you got lucky. i just dont want people to expect that by removing them they will gain 2 miles per gallon.

@itsajeepthing...yes you can. I just removed the rack and cross bars from my roof yesterday. I put the screws back in to close the holes. I was going the fill in the holes with silicone and plastic rivets but I did not have on hand. I think that I will go with the SRT rail deletes. I am looking for a used pair if anyone has a set or know where I can get them. I could order new ones but trying to keep mods cost effective so I can do more. Also good write up and pix!!
