Wheel Corrosion
My 2011 Limited has corrosion around the center caps of the wheels. Has anyone experienced the same? It goes to the dealer next week for an observation. It looks like water has gotten trapped in the center cap and began to work it's way outward causing the finish to bubble.

Re: Wheel Corrosion
Just did a walk around of mine (46,700 miles) and they look new. I will look at others on my daily errands, but this is odd. I'm only a couple hours north of you, so we get just as much road salt as you. Are they adding anything unusual to your salt?

Re: Wheel Corrosion
Do you go to automatic washes that spray stuff on your wheels?

In all reality that "stuff" may be acidic and that is what caused that. Also spraying anything on hot wheels is a no no.

Re: Wheel Corrosion
Water alone wouldn't cause that kind of damage. Whatever caused it is corrosive.

My wheels don't look like that and they weren't washed at all between mid-Nov and mid-May. That's an awful lot of exposure to road salt up here in that time.

Re: Wheel Corrosion
My 17"s were experiencing the same issue. The dealer pulled the wheels off and found the back of them and inside the hub was rusted. They took a grinder, removed the rust and re-painted the back/hub of the rims.

Re: Wheel Corrosion
I will check back on Wednesday. It is going to the dealer on Tuesday.
Hopefully this will be resolved. (Also the first test of the lifetime extended manufacturer warranty)
One car wash during the winter. I have heard of water collecting behind the center cap. That would cause the rust RangeofFury experienced.

Re: Wheel Corrosion
Just out of curiosity... did any of you with this wheel corrosion ever have your tires changed or spin balanced?

Re: Wheel Corrosion
I bought the jeep last february with 37 000 miles with the 20" wheels mounted on winter tires. The former owner used to switch winter/summer every spring/fall. I guess using the wheels during Canadian winter with salt etc on the road didn't help the corrosion? I need to find 20" black rims for next winter to fit the brand new winter tires that came with the truck but so far i didn't find any. Other solution would be to keep the oem wheels for the winter and buy others set of wheels for summer..

Re: Wheel Corrosion
The reason I asked about tire changing and/or balancing...

My 02 JGC had 12 winters worth of driving on WI salted roads. They were pretty beat up by the time I got my 14 and looked very similar to the above pics, only worse.

If the clearcoat finish is in any way compromised by damage caused by tire changers or wheel balancers then moisture or other corrosives can work themselves under the clearcoat. That's how my 02 wheels ended up looking so bad... it was around the outside rim and center hub. Areas not damaged by tire changers/balancers still looked brand new.
