skis issue

Hey all, I have an 02 wj, with the i6. Just reciently my light with the key with the circle and line through it lit up and my gauge cluster went dead. It started where they would come back and randomly work but now they all are just dead. It made my check engine light come on too. But only when the gauges aren't working. I tried using my spare key and that too has the same problem. Then I don't know if this is related or if I just have the worst luck but the windows on my jeep won't go up anymore from any switch and when I lock or unlock my jeep with the key fob the lights don't blink and horn doesnt sound. The doors still lock and unlock. Any ideas on what i should do? I checked fuses and those are all ok.

Re: skis issue

Your problem seems to be with the PCI data bus. When this bus shorts out, you loose instrument cluster and many other things. Could be broken wire in drivers door boot. Try first a reset by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes.

Is there a way to fix the pci data bus or is that a stealership must to fix it?

Did you disconnect the battery first and checked the wires in the door boot? PCI bus problems are not that easy to solve. You could check the bus voltage by putting a multimeter in Volts position between pin 2 of the data connector below the steering wheel and ground. A good bus will give around 2.5 V. When 0V then the bus is shorted. That is many times water in a connector, C200 on the passenger side bulkhead. When the voltage is around 7.5 V, then one of the connected components has a problem and is pulling the bus voltage up. Then you should remove each component one by one from the bus, until the bus is back at 2.5 V. Components on the bus are: PCM, TCM, BCM, SKIM, door modules, A/C head unit, EVIC, original radio and instrument cluster. Until 2003 models there is a shorting plug under the steering wheel. Removing the shorting cap removes all components from the bus, except PCM and SKIM. From that point you could connect each (group of) components to the bus and check the bus voltage. Much more easy then remove each component.

Battery cables are good but now my jeep wont stay started for more then 2 seconds. I read up on it and it says that that's supposed to happen if in fact I didn't have the right chipped keys, but i do. So I am at a loss, I will check the wires in the doors tomorrow I tried takin the boot off the wires but didn't really have time to fiddle with it today. Is there a trick to get that boot off? It didn't seem to want to just come off.

The SKIM sends the key ok signal to the PCM via the PCI bus, so when the PCI bus is death, the engine starts and runs for 3 seconds and then dies. Did you disconnect the battery for some minutes and try again?
You can not remove the rubber boot, only peel it back a bit.
If you have a multimeter, i would start measuring the voltage on pin 2 of the data bus connector. If its not around the 2 V, then the bus has a problem. Did it rain lately? If so, then i would have a look at the C200 connector at the passengers side footwell area. Water ingress in this connector is known to cause PCI bus problems.

I'll have to check that connector on the passenger side too today

Well short in my pci bus causing all kinds of problems like the skis to malfunction. So she sits at a shop waiting to be fixed. Quoted at about 500 dollars. Oh joy...

Did you check the C200 connector for water ingress? Ironman had a problem like yours and found this connector wet. His problem is still not 100% solved it seems, but his instruments and EVIC are at least working again and the engine runs as well.

trxgedy 06-27-2014 09:21 PM

Yeah I checked, but no wet connector I took it to a locksmith for the skis system and they found the short. They are fixing it for me

Re: skis issue

Do you know where they found the short?

trxgedy 06-27-2014 10:23 PM

No they called while I was working and I just said fix it.
