RWD vs 4X4

Went to the dealer today to buy a diesel GC limited and they are going to have to do a dealer trade to get the one we want. I'm trying to decide between rwd and 4X4 for my wife's daily driver. I have a 4X4 truck that I use 4 wheel drive on occasion and its nice to have when you need it.

Should we go with a 4X2 or 4X4? I think the difference is $26 between the two. Just want to hear other peoples thoughts.

Thanks

Wellp you live in TX so snow should not be an issue. Its your wife's daily driver vehicle that will likely never see an offroad situation. Why buy a more complex and less efficient vehicle that's turning more wheels than needed? If I lived in the south I would absolutely consider 2wd. Im not trying to tell you what to do, but I would certainly consider it.

Even if you are not going to take it off road or mudding 4x4 can still come in really handy:

-slippery boat ramps -- really helps getting up the ramp when your back wheels are on pure algae
- Texas ice storms -- yes we really do have them!! And it's more ice than snow usually. Since the Jeep is really more of an AWD system it really helps on inclement weather days/snow days/ice days. I feel much better having AWD/4x4 in the SRT. Even just in the rain--with the torque of the diesel I'd feel safer with AWD.
-resale -- I think it is the general consensus that if/when you go to sell your Jeep that having a 4x4 can really help you out - they sell quicker and you can get more for it.

But after saying all of that you would be totally fine buying a 2x4. The Jeeps have excellent traction control and stability control so don't worry about just having RWD. It's all really personal preference and how you are going to use it. You can't go wrong either way if you get what YOU want!

4x4... definitely.

RWD with all the technology will get you through just about any on road situation. Anything worse, except in an emergency, you probably should stay home anyway.

I am starting to look for a new vehicle and would settle for rwd. But I will probably go with AWD over FWD.

When I think of a Jeep, I think of 4x4. My wife drives a rwd ford expo now and never had a problem. When we go to the deer lease (lots of sand) or beach, you have to know how to drive it without getting stuck. Momentum is your friend! We will be towing a wakeboarding boat with it on occasion.

I never thought I would be hung on this decision.

This is exactly where I am, though the only technology my old RWD truck has is a (mechanical) LSD so I mostly rely on the nut behind the wheel. RWD, nothing-special tires, no weight in the back other than the snow that falls, and I've made it through some roads that I really should not have been on.

In your place I'd go for the 4x4 if it's readily available. Not a huge difference in price, probably not a huge difference in efficiency, tons of them on the road so it's not an unknown quantity. Get whatever will put a bigger smile on your wife's face (and yours, since it might become your daily driver in a few years).

I would never buy a 2WD Jeep, regardless of where I lived. To me I just don't see the purpose of the Jeep if you neuter it from all of its capabilities. You do have rain, you do have ice at times, you may wish to travel somewhere that has weather, and when resale comes around a 4WD is going to be more universally sellable than a 2WD which really only appeals to people in the south.

My cousin bought a 2WD Patriot when he lived in FL against my recommendation. Now he lives back in WV and every time it snows he kicks himself for not getting 4WD.

Now, that said another sort of vehicle I would have no issue getting RWD. On my Lexus i only have the AWD because thats all they sell here, I would have preferred the RWD...but thats because we have the Jeep.

Are you serious ? Even if the difference were $2,600 the answer would be 4x4.

The thing is that there is nearly zero difference in fuel efficiency between them in the real world. And the 4x4 provides much more utility, even on pavement, such as better performance in the wet. With few exceptions, I'd opt for AWD/4x4 for sure.
