Oil and filter for 3.6L

Just want to know what oil you guys have been using for your 3.6 engines and also if anyone has experienced any problems with not using a mopar oil filter. I see that bosch and stp make similar ones but I do not want to make a mistake and cause any damage to my engine. Thanks for the help.

Keep in mind that the oil filter for the 2014 3.6L engine was changed...so becareful what you buy for your 2012.

I personally will be using only a Mopar oil filter...and as for oil, synthetic...in the viscosity listed in the owners manual.

Just did my first change at 5,000 miles. Stuck with the Mopar filter since they are so inexpensive. Switched to synthetic Pennzoil. The oil debate is ongoing and endless, so use whatever makes you happy.

Filter: Amazon.com: 68191349AA: Automotive
Oil: Purchase Pennzoil Ultra 5W20 Motor Oil, 5 Qt for less at Walmart.com. Save money. Live better.

***Edit - Sorry, just noticed your 2012 year KJ. Filter info. above is for 2014. I belive your Mopar filter is 68079744AB :

You can't go wrong with a factory filter. The only after market filter that seems to consistently rate high is WIX. Big brand names or German names don't mean anything other than marketing in my experience.

because using a non recommended oil viscosity seems like a great idea

I've been using 0-30w in everything with no problems.hell dealer used 10-30w for the first oil change. read Tomstheoilguy 0w is the way to go.

There are kits to change from the canister type filter, to a twist off, standard type of filter. The dealer that does a good job uses 5-30 semi-synthetic and that keep the service contract in check. They use Mopar which is Jeep filters. Haven't had any engine issues, but time for the 4wD service at 45K-48K and doing some research as gear oils have changed to make it more confusing. Its good you are doing your research. Most dealers have very reasonable oil changing fees, these days. Almost all dealers around here have a quick lane an its $19.99 with shop fee and tax comes out to under $25. every 4K, that makes sense to have them do it. However 4300 to change the gear oil in the differentials and drain and fill the transfer case when the FIL get parts cost plus 10% and is a certified mechanic. I'll go with the self do it job on that.

I'll chime in with my $0.02.

Factory filter from the local dealer (just a couple miles away from me, can't beat that) and Castrol Syntec (or whatever they call it now-a-days).

I ran 6K miles on the OEM oil and 8K between changes ever since (with synthetic).

My last change was at 22K and I just rolled over 24K and happened to be under the hood and checked the oil level... Dead on full. Hasn't burned a drop since the oil change. Didn't burn any between any of the last oil changes either. Funny thing is, I'm so used to keeping a spare bottle on the shelf in the garage, but I haven't needed it for my last 3 vehicles (all ran synthetic after initial break in).

Oh, and I don't baby the V6 either. Occasional 'deep throttle' runs just to have some fun!

Thanks Todd I plan on doing the same for my WK2. What's the part number for the filter?

I honestly don't know.
I usually just walk in and say 2012 Grand Cherokee with the v6.

Checked my last receipt and it shows:
