Anyone ever get their catback welded?

So I have the MBRP 3in exhaust now. Sounds great, and actually not much drone which is nice.

It is a 3 piece design, and clamped together, not bolted.

Well i was driving, and hit a pot hole and a part of the exhaust popped out of the clamp. I had a socket set on me and fixed it, but still, it shouldnt do that

I was wondering if anyone has had their exhaust welded together, and just removed the clamps? Figure it cant cost too much or take too much time.

And for those interested, Ill hopefully have a video up tonight or tomorrow of the exhaust, before and after throttle body install ( which is now waiting for me on my porch)

I could never ever have a clamped exhaust, it's certainly not the way we do it in Australia. Clamping is low rent. Welding is the only proper way.

All my stuff has always been welded, but I'd like flanges next time.

My entire true dual exhaust is one piece.

Not bad ($)...I would weld it, except at the flanges, of course. The only exception is if it used those SS wrap around clamps (can't recalll term). I have these on my (g)VR-4 and they work great and make removing (for cleaning/polishing :) ) the pieces easy and seal well. the downside is they can be $$$

The term you're looking for is V-bands. They are VERY expensive.

Re: Anyone ever get their catback welded?

Yes, they are...no, these are not those, as they are designed to simply wrap around the pipe ends, joinging them. V-bands require that a flange is welded on either side of the pipe and the v-band "clamp" wraps around those flanges, joined, creating the seal, if you will...My turbo is held together like that (compressor housing to centersection) and many of the newer ones use them for wastegate and/or downpipe attachment. Slick and avoids all the bolts and gaskets, needing flat surfaces, etc...

These are what I was referring to, btw:
