Engine cooling fan 4.7 HO

Can anyone tell me how the cooling fan should run on my 04 GC overland ? The fan does not seem to spin very fast. I honestly can say I have never seen a fan like this one, it appears that the power steering pump drives it. I do not think I am overheating but thought the fan should move much faster than it does. Any insight into this is much appreciated.

how fast does it spin? Can you see the blades when spinning?

Yes i can see the blades , the fan slows down when reving the engine and speeds up slightly when idling.

sounds good to me. Any overheating?

No overheating just kinda thought it should spin faster. Not familiar with this type of fan set-up.

Maybe a bad fan clutch? I have no idea but the guide to replacing it is http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums...d.php?t=496635

I think its fine till you get overheating or it doesnt run at all

It is driven by the power steering pump. Which means when your PS pump sh!ts the bed, you also lose your fan. No bueno.

it spins slowly at idle and is commanded by the PCM to turn on into a high speed mode at 220* F.

actually the electric fan is pcm controlled. the mechanical fan is controlle by a clutch. you can actually remove the fan to free up a little power. most people agree it's overkill on the 4.7. look up clutch fan removal on one of the larger forums

The OP is talking about the hydraulic fan featured on the later WJs.

I'd say to just be safe...Take out the mechanical fan and clutch and inspect the fan for bends, and if that is in good shape replace the viscous clutch with one from Autozone for 55$ if you have the money. Isn't that what controls how fast it spins under certain heat? If that is stuck, wouldn't it not spin right like he is experiencing?

Re: Engine cooling fan 4.7 HO

It is a hydraulic fan fed hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump. It is working fine. It has a soleniod in the bottom of the fan that controls the speed by controlling how much hydraulic pressure that is put on the fan.

IT IS NOT A MECHANICAL CLUTCH FAN OR ELECTRIC FAN IT IS HYDRAULIC!!!!!
