HID low beams = tail light failure??

Hey ya'll,

I installed a Raptor HID low beam kit w/ a wiring harness in my '08 GC. Everything was working fine for at least 3 weeks. The other day my turn signal light on my dash indicated a bulb failure (flashed rapidly) on the driver side rear so I replaced the bulb. Didn't fix the prob. Turns out that everytime I turn on my HIDs the entire rear driver side assembly goes out - turn signal, break lights. HIDs off, everything works; HIDs on, whole assembly goes out. The tech guys at DDM Tuning have never had this problem and have no idea of the cause. Anyone experience this or have any suggestions??

Thanks

that is really strange, i have an 08 laredo with aftermarket hids and hadn't had that problem...

where are your grounds located for the hids?
are you using a relay?
which fuse did you replace?

same here I have an 08 and to date no issues...post up some pics if you have them so we can see how you installed the HIDs/relay(s)

might be a fuse. replace it and see

I dont have any pics right now, but I can get some up asap. Until then I'll summarize what I did and see if that helps the diagnosis. I ordered the 35w kit and when it wasnt straight plug and play I ordered the wiring harness (both from DDM Tuning). I attached the positive and negative wires to my battery as instructed, then matched the harness to the appropriate bulb/ballast wires and to the oem wires. The lights fired up just like that and worked without incident for several weeks. This problem arose 2-3 days ago. I'll check the fuses and try to get those pics up here. I'm not real "literate" if you will, when it comes to this stuff so I'm not sure if I used a relay or not. Just the wiring harness and the HID Kit and followed the instructions. Any additional suggestions or advice would be great.

Thanks

well if they gave you an additional wiring harness to solve any flickering issues, that would be the relay. post pics when you can

That could be your problem right there...I think you should try connecting the negative wire to a frame bolt to ensure a proper ground...I know that when I was looking at installs and pics that everyone said DO NOT connect the ground to the battery...only to a sanded metal bolt/frame location. Hopefully that helps

Thanks for the input. I'll work on the pics. In the mean time i'll check the fuse and try grounding it to the frame. Do those of you who have installed HIDs in an '08 GC have any suggestions as to a good place to ground it? I seem to remember having trouble locating a place I felt confident about using. Thanks again.

if you are looking at the engine bay. driver side next to the battery is a bolt. that bolt has a few wires already under it. that is a good ground

here is a info thread I made...I drilled two holes and sanded down the contact areas...others have used the inner-fender bolts with success

Update: I checked all the fuses and they are all fine. I have not had a chance to try gounding it to the frame yet, however.

Again I apologize, I'm pretty new at this, but how do you post pics? I took some, but I can't figure out how to insert them.

B.P.O.D, in the pic you posted are you grounding that black box? I have that too, but I dont have it grounded - didnt occur to me since the lights work fine the way it is now.

Also, I was looking through the manual and the section pertaining to the fuses, lists slots for HID lights. It has one that is a 40amp and is labled HID lights. Then there are 2 25amp slots labled HID Left and HID Right. I attempted to pull a 40A and put it in the appropriate slot, but it didnt do anything. Would adding fuses in these slots do any good?
