Brake calipers..

Its time to change my brake pads but i don't know if the calipers i have are the original and faulty Teves or replacement akebono's. Without doing much surgery, how can i tell which ones i have?

Re: Brake calipers..

According the info i have you can see it the best by looking at the color of the caliper:

1. Original (from 1999 model production through May 10, 2002 (Teves, black color with open-sided bracket)
2. New (from May 11, 2002 production onward: (Akebono, silver color "fully closed" style)

Can any body tell me if there is a special tool or socket required for removing the caliper pins on a 2000 grand cherokee? Help!!!!!!!

I can't remember if they were hex or star... but nothing too out of the ordinary.

They're just a standard hex, 6mm I think. They should be greased before putting them back in, otherwise you run the risk of them seizing. I can imagine they'd be a bugger to get out if they are rusted up. May have to use an air wratchet or try a breaker bar of some sort, but you won't have much room to turn the bar.

Re: Brake calipers..

I just replaced the pads on my WJ. If you are sill wondering if you have akebono's or not, the most definitive piece of evidence in my mind with the back side of the caliper where it says "akebono" stamped into the metal. I also had quite a bit of trouble with my slide pins, having two of them ceased. The slide pin should require no tools to remove, once you have removed the 17mm (if i remember correctly) bolts that hold the caliper in place, the slide pin should slide out, the rubber boot will come off as well. If your pins are stuck, carefully pull back the boot and apply copious amounts of PB Blaster (or comparable), and use of a wrench on the flat sides on the head of the pin, if you can get it to spin and continue to apply the cleaner/blaster, it will loosen and come out. You'll fight with it though. Or another rout is to remove the caliper mounting bracket and replace it and the pins and boots (i got a bracket, pins, and boots for around $30)

Re: Brake calipers..

I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee with the Teves setup, and I had the same problem the other day--my left front caliper froze up--pins were rusted in place--I am just going to replace the two front calipers with NAPA--and new hardware...

Question here---Should I have to do much bleeding if I leave the system closed , other than taking the brake lines loose and switching over to a new caliper??

Tks in advance--
