HELP NEEDED - Used SUV for $5k

What up JG? I need everyones assistance: One of my girlfrineds needs to buy and SUV. She has $5k in-hand...needs to get good gas mileage (+20mpgs is preferred, but anything over 18 is good), it needs to be safe (she has a 5 year-old), semi-low miles and easy to maintain (ie no 97 Range Rovers :D)

Current ideas:

Toyota 4Runner
Chevy Trailblazer
Jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee
Nissan Pathfinder or Xterra

I have never owned any other the above vehicles in the model-years she would need to buy. Please post if you can help with any of the following:

1. How was your experience with any of the above vehicles (maintenance, fit/finish, reliability etc)?
2. Have you bought one of these recently? List make, model, miles and options with price
3. Do you have a recommendation for another vehicle that is not listed?

Any and all related info is greatly appreciated...I found a 1998 Jeep GC ltd with a v8, only 69K miles for $3700. Is that a good deal? Seems like it, esp with the low miles and v8. What kind of gas mileage could she expect? Is that 5.9 if its a v8? I know the 4.7 wasn't out yet...

Thanks in advance JG  :D

I had a jeep, then traded for another jeep, traded that for a trailblazer, couldn't wait to trade that for the jeep I have now, in short...GET A JEEP! If you can find a 98 or 99 jeep GC with about a 100K thats not abused ... for that kinda money ..go for it... good luck

I had a 98 Tacoma before I got my Jeep. I know they are a lot like the 4runners. It seems that the Jeep is a hell of a lot easier to work on. I can say that I did have my Tacoma from from November 98 until March 2010 and never had any problems. Great vechiles. It was a V6 4X4 and always got around 18 in town and with highway tires I would get 25 miles per gallon. Hope it helps

thanks for the help guys...I like the WJ's and if its in good shape I will recommend that as an option.

JustinRedding - The Tacoma is an interesting option...and you could get 25 mpg's on the freeway? WOW

Re: HELP NEEDED - Used SUV for $5k

ok please help WJ owners....

I found a Limited 2002 WJ with the 4.0 2wd

It is blue with chrome rims (two good shape, two BAD shape), leather but worn, basic radio, and all the power locks/windows etc. I saw good service history for the past two years, and was only driven 7K miles in the last year. It has a total of 172,XXX miles.

The good:

Starts right up, feels good, no unusual wear on rotors, new battery and fuel pump, no fluid build-up in bad areas, no visible leaks in brake lines and hoses (10 min inspection, so not complete but fairly thorough) Dash is good, no rips in leather, no cracks in bumpers and no major body damage. New front headlight (replaced due to damage to front end, new bumper as well...saw paperwork and write-up, no frame damage)

The bad:

Passenger side window does not work, needs new rear tires ASAP, no oil change in last year (only 7K), 4 or 5 minimal dents around vehicle (ex drivers b pillar, hood, etc) but nothing major, scratches on bumpers, and the chrome on two wheels is shot (prolly repaint all four, which would be a fun project), the emissions light is on (could be something as simple as an o2 sensor? or could be worse? are there typical issues with the 4.0 2002 wj's?)

So he was asking $4900....I offered $4K for my friend, thinking that with $750 in service and parts we could get it dialed in. The price is now $4300. Is that a good deal?

I think if she can get the car for around $4K, with the $1K that is left over we could make it into a sweet ride....agreed?

Go with a ZJ, I loved mine and has always kicked my own ass for selling it. Go with the 4.0. It maybe slow but I kicked the living hell out of it and it was begging for more.
