DTC P0720 Output Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
When i'm not wrong that is the output speed sensor from the tranny. Remove, clean and reconnect the connector to see if this will solve your problem.

Re: code p 0720

Cleaning the connector is very easy. You just have to crawl underneath your car and the output sensor is on the RH aft side of the tranny (at least on the 545RFE i have). If the cleaning doesn't help, you will have to look for some damaged wiring or maybe even the sensor itself. You could swap the input and output sensors to see if the fault stays or not.

Re: code p 0720

What exactly does that sensor do because I notice now that the tranny is having trouble shifting out of first gears

Re: code p 0720

The TCM uses the input and output speeds from the tranny (and many other inputs) to calculate the shifting schedule. So if you miss on of the inputs, it can be that it starts shifting harsh or not at all.
